Unlike the Beast's servants, they are depicted as awake, meaning either their homeworld was not devoured by the Heartless, or that the Dwarfs were able to get to safety beforehand. Sneezy's job is to stuff with the mattress, which inevitably causes him to let off a humongous sneeze. At the mine, Doc inspects and sorts through the diamonds which Bashful, Grumpy, Happy and Sneezy have dug up. When the dwarfs return home from work, Doc is the first to notice the light inside the house, signalling an intruder. After Snow White insists that the dwarfs wash up for supper, Doc shows them how to do it step by step with "The Dwarfs' Washing Song". Later that evening, after supper, the seven dwarfs entertain Snow White with the " Silly Song", Sneezy yodels a long verse while a transfixed Dopey watches his Adam's apple bob up and down vigorously. Dopey then attempts to perch on Sneezy's shoulders wearing a long trench coat which almost makes Sneezy sneeze, but Dopey prevents it by holding Sneezy's nose with his feet, and they fumble on to dance with Snow White. Right at the climax of the song, Sneezy, with Dopey still on shoulders starts jittering both his words and his movements, peering through the bottom half the coat to warn his brothers and Snow White that a sneeze is on the way. Everybody dives for cover just as Sneezy jitters some more before letting out the huge sneeze from earlier, thus inflating the coat which causes Dopey to pop out of the top letting the coat slow sink down to reveal Sneezy's smiling face. This gives everyone a good laugh.

In the Princesses series by Jim C. Hines, the dwarfs are actually anthropomorphic elemental personifications, summoned by Snow to aid her based on a spell from one of her mother's books. The seven dwarfs represent Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Light, Shadow, and Magic, although the 'Magic' dwarf is essentially a spirit that just inhabits Snow and enhances her power rather than appearing on its own, with the others appearing in some form to represent their element. Although powerful fighters that will serve Snow loyally, the consequences of summoning them is that Snow must 'pay' the spirits with seven years of her life, with the result that she appears to be in her mid-thirties when she is really only in her early twenties. As a result, she has only summoned the dwarves twice, initially calling on their aid to help her defeat her mother before the series began, and summoning them again to help her and her allies defeat her mother's spirit in the first book in the series (she contemplated summoning them against to deal with the ruthless Wild Hunt in Red Riding's Revenge, but was advised against it as the spiritual nature of the hunt meant that nobody could be sure if the dwarves could do anything against them).

At the mine, Happy digs up diamonds with Bashful, Grumpy and Sneezy. When the seven dwarfs return home from work, Happy smells something good cooking in the cauldron and is eager to try it, but Grumpy stops him, warning it might be poison. When the dwarfs prepare to wash up for supper, Happy tests the water and notes with dismay that it's wet. Even though none of the dwarfs want to wash, Happy says he'll "take a chance" for Snow White, if it will please her, and asks Doc if he should "get in the tub". During the "Silly Song", Happy shows off his vocal skills with a yodelling solo.
