Description

Although Audie Murphy turned his heroism into successful career as a B-movie star in Hollywood, his undiagnosed post-traumatic stress led to broken marriages, heavy drinking, a clash with police, and an eventual death in a plane crash in 1971.

I highly recommend people give this book a read as it will open your eyes to just how difficult other peoples lives have been. His autobiography tells of being saved by boxing as a youngster, how its focus and discipline kept him from being sexually abused by those in power and provided an outlet for the rage he carried into adulthood. He went on to become the first black officer in the British Army, to lead white troops in to battle, and was fondly regarded by the men who served under him.

When Paul reached the desperate point where he thought he would end the lives of his abusers, amazingly the words and relationship with his psychologist were enough. I feel like I may need to repeat the word autobiography to myself often, just to remind myself that this really happened and that it wasn't just some gritty fictional novel that I was reading. I am astonished also that i have always had this theory that you cannot do anything in life wthout backup and support, i feel that for nearly everybody support is the basic need to get on with and achieve things in life BUT THIS MAN DID IT OFF HIS OWN BACK ! It didn't take me very long to realise I was reading a real life situation where a very young boy was thrown into a world of horrible and dangerous people; rapists, paedophiles, sadists, masochists and the list goes on, I was born in 1960 to loving parents and as such I wasn't aware of the horrors that were going on at that time. Why do some men rise above the chaos and fear of a battlefield to perform not one, but multiple acts of battlefield heroics?

Those not knowledgable about the complexities of the damage caused by sexual, mental, emotional, and physical abuse will be given a raw, crash course. Bravo to Jeffery for keeping my interest start to finish despite my notoriously short attention span. Like many men of his generation his life was cut short for the greater good whilst in the service of his country, so that others might prevail. It's incredibly brave to lay your soul bare like Paul has and for that he should be very proud of himself turning out the way he has. Against All Odds achieves a pitch-perfect balance between a ground view of combat and the seismic forces that drew men like [Maurice] Britt and [Audie] Murphy to the killing grounds of Europe. You cannot help but understand how he becomes able to protect himself in life albeit with some aggression.

Against All Odds is the first book in Katie Piper's UnSeen series, which shed light on untold stories of unwavering hope that deserve to be heard.

It creates this extra dimension for the characters and the storytelling and really adds to the overall Narration for the audiobook. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).
