Description

The ATH-M20xBT are a mixed bag. Audio quality is fantastic for the price, with plenty of bass and a detailed mid-range doing justice to a wide range of genres. Battery life is also impressive, ensuring you won’t find yourself having to charge the headphones more than once every couple of weeks, if that. Disconnect and then reconnect the USB charging cable to reset the product. Resetting does not change any of your settings (pairing information, volume setting, etc.) Given that Bluetooth operation requires fitting chips, power and batteries inside the headphones, the first surprise is how light the new wireless headphones are, at 216 grams – that’s just 26 grams over the non-wireless version. With the product turned on, press and hold (about 6 seconds) the volume buttons (+/–) at the same time.

The modern headphone’s design features a convenient single-side cable exit for hassle-free listening. Find out why the online reviewers, top audio engineers, and passionate fans agree, the M-Series is an unmatched combination of audio and build quality that provides a pure professional performance for an affordable price. While these may not include noise cancelling, I did find that the secure fit meant the sound isolation was pretty good. I didn’t find myself getting too annoyed at the outside noise penetrating through the headphones but I was still able to hear what was going on around me. Personally, I prefer the less-hyped tuning of the M20xBT compared to M50, and if you are sensitive to upper frequency, the M20 might be a better option. Having said that, the M50xBT2 is a more premium headphones with more features like LDAC, custom EQ, better build, so you pay for better features with limited-edition colour options. Plus, music played on M50 is much clearer, the highs are more articulated and precise. Its tuning is more likable to the general listeners.Connect the headphones to the USB port of a computer using the USB cable provided as though you were charging them. If you’d prefer, you can switch to the low-latency mode in the Audio-Technica Connect app, where you’ll also find your battery life displayed and a broad selection of useful customisation options. In addition to a five-band equaliser, you’ve got the option to cycle audio codecs, adjust the left/right balance and toggle sidetone and guide sounds on or off. If you're after lots of control over the sound, the Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT don't have any manual or preset equaliser settings. That could be off-putting to some but given the clarity of the tuning straight out the box, I wouldn’t say that’s a dealbreaker.

Turning it up helps, but as noted, Bluetooth level is limited. Noise-cancelling would both clarify and protect your ears against needing to play louder. Moving to the audio quality, the ATH-M20xBT sounds more neutral compared to the ATH-M50xBT2 that is known to have bright tuning. The M20xBT has relatively more midrange presence which adds musical support to the upper bass and lower treble, resulting in a more full, meaty sound. The stereo imaging is wide and close, feels like I’m positioned in front of the performers. Its lower bass is less intense, the upper treble is less intensely sparkling than the M50. On the M50, the music sounds more exciting, more airy and sizzling, acoustic genres like Classical and Jazz plays brilliantly on the M50. Compared to the ATH-S220BT, the M20xBT sounds clearer, the upper midrange is less emphasised. The omnidirectional mic sounds fine. We had no issues understanding every word from a test recording on an iPhone. Bluetooth audio artifacts are minimal in the signal and the mic sounds highly equalized to focus on the human voice. The latter effect might make you sound a bit unnatural, but it certainly helps improve clarity on calls. While it may be basic, I liked the fact that these have physical buttons because they work more effectively and more consistently than the touch panels on some other cheaper headphones. This entry-level M-series is a notch up from the ATH-S220BT, but with a small price difference, the M20xBT looks more “professional” with a sturdier build. Compared to the ATH-M50xBT2, the M20xBT feels more lightweight, the headband clamping force is lighter, and the earcups are slightly larger. In terms of comfort, I prefer wearing the M20xBT over the M50xBT2, but the M20xBT cannot be folded, so it takes more space when carrying it around. And obviously the M50xBT2 feels more robust and solid thanks to its flexible earcups that can pivot and swivel in any direction. The M50xBT2 also offers better passive noise isolation. Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT vs. ATH-M50xBT2 M20xBT Features Make sure the indicator lamp is flashing rapidly in white, and press and hold the power supply / control button and the volume up button (+) at the same time (for about 6 seconds). Audio-Technica over-ear headphones provide excellent sound isolation in loud environments. Combining modern design and high-quality materials, the ATH-M20xBT delivers an ideal listening experience for those that put audio first. Audio-Technica didn’t need to include any listening modes, but they added a Low Latency mode for enhanced streaming and gaming. There wasn’t any difference when watching Netflix shows or YouTube clips. I’m not an avid gamer, but from the short amount of time I put into Call of Duty Mobile and Mario Run, audio synchronization was improved when enabling the feature. Make sure the indicator lamps on both headphones light in red and then turn white before releasing your fingers. Reset is complete.
