It’s a topic extremely exposed to the dangers of being exaggerated, or misunderstood by a contemporary reader; but she succeeds in making this difficult dynamic a believable backdrop for the story. When morning broke Nessa Crowley’s lifeless body lay in the garden, her last breath silenced by the music and the thunder. Unafraid to depict the exhausting reality of caring, her timely story is compassionate and humane, judiciously blending the personal with the political; as she eloquently argues, “care is a feminist issue”. This book is so beautifully written with a story that is totally engrossing and keeps you guessing until the end.

O’Neill engages me, gets me thinking about these issues, all while telling a deep, rich, dark story.
