Aside from failing to look like a next-gen game should, it’s worth pointing out that the environment – be it Cybertronian or Earth – will be hell-bent on trying to trap your lumbering hunk of metal, leaving you wasting inordinate amounts of time struggling to escape from the grips of an unruly pile of rubble rather than defending your faction. The reaction this game is getting is genuinely surprising me, I can't see anything in the game that would make a 3/10. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark lets these wonderful characters shine, giving you instruments of incredible destruction and plenty of opportunities to use them. Unlike Fall of Cybertron and War for Cybertron, which were developed by High Moon Studios, primary development for Rise of the Dark Spark was handled by Edge of Reality. None of them were mind-blowingly good, but they succeeded in setting their own tone while staying inline with the film series, and delivered a mostly enjoyable action romp with a fun horde mode before it was featured in every game ever.

There is literally an early cutscene with Optimus Prime on Earth that looks as if it was rendered on a PSP. The player character has both a regenerating shield and health, the latter of which can be replenished by a health pack. Back in the film continuity, the Autobots track Lockdown to a jungle, with Bumblebee and Drift being sent to scout ahead and find the mercenaries' stronghold. We made a number of changes to Escalation to bring it to the fore, including unified character progression that allows any unlock you’ve gotten to be used in either Escalation or Campaign mode. Each of these characters play an integral role in the adventure, among other familiar faces that will be popping up.

In fact, the only real immediate difference that you’ll notice to High Moon's output is the terrible narrative structure which attempts to glue the game together. Optimus Prime features two separate character models from these continuities, plus a Transformers: Generation 1 model. There are also collectibles, so there is room for a lot of replayability in your pursuit to unlock everything and reach level 25. The bottom line is that this game was a rush job in a futile attempt to merge the successful formula of the High Moon games with the questionable material from the Bay movie line. Very rare I post here but with this review I feel that I have to make a statement about the game at the very least.There’s an attempt here to please both old hands and newcomers – with the franchise’s classic universe clashing with its new one – but it merely results in an incoherent rollercoaster ride that possesses no real direction. On Earth, in the film continuity, the Autobots Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Drift investigate the site of a mysterious crash in an abandoned city, encountering a large group of Cybertronian mercenaries led by Lockdown. There are new opponent types, including big-names that you know from the series appearing among the enemy ranks as challenging mini-bosses. How about three Insecticons, five Combaticons, four Dinobots, three Stunticons, three Aerialbots, TWO versions of Bumblebee, and THREE unique versions of Optimus Prime! Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is available on seven different platforms, a 3DS strategy game (not reviewed here), and a action-shooter that plays similarly on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.

In the end, Dark Spark succumbs to the pressure, even if it does put up one hell of a fight to stay above the average bar it has so easily slunk into. Previous versions of Escalation forced you to play as one of four predefined characters on a given map.
