About this deal

I also loved the directed questions, as this draws the reader further into the story, and can be useful for teachers to use in class discussions on the book. I have always made images and thought up stories, but it was a job at the local library that changed everything for me: I fell in love with children’s books. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. They will have to walk and walk and walk, and although they will see many new and interesting things, it will be hard at times too.

After reading the whole text and discussing the after-reading questions, go back and read the book through a second time. As we go along their journey, the text occasionally turns towards the reader and asks a direct question of them: "Can you speak more than one language? While the dangers and difficulties of the boy’s long journey are made clear through words and the stark, rather beautiful pictures, there’s still room for play and adventure, which makes the boy’s experiences more real and recognisable for youngsters.

Our handy teaching pack is bursting with essential teaching materials to support children's learning about World Refugee Day. This book has discussion points throughout the book which can be used to help pupils think about how they conceptualise children who are refugees and begin to see them as children just like them not just refugees. And those refugee children, who are so much more open to change and are capable of adapting to new environments more readily than adults and experience things differently, to see them through Milner's words, it's truly moving. This is a simple story with clear illustrations that help you imagine some of the things that refugees have to go through. Is she exposing the realities of refugees and escaping from a war or persecution etc or is she just telling someone else’s story. My name is not Refugee’ has been curated by Elizabeth Curry, Münevver Gülsen Ülker, Samia, Diego Robirosa and Mr and Mrs Al-Chahin, working together with many more clients of and volunteers from Refugee Action Colchester. It’s a preschool book, so it’s a hit light on what it’s actually like to be a refugee but it’s sad and hopeful and encourages children to think about how they’d cope with being away from everything they loved and hopefully teach them a bit of empathy.

I recommend you to read this amazing book because it would telll you not to bully refugees or other people . Milner's narrative is short, but certainly not sweet, as the unnamed child narrator recounts what their mother has told him and the unusual activities, scenes, sounds and scents that he explores on his way to his new home. See landscape paintings, video, sculpture, ceramics and photography that inspire a different way of thinking, alongside scents that are familiar in the regions from which the group have travelled. One of the most effective illustrations for me was the one of the boy and his mum joining the line of endless people waiting. This just comes to show that readers’ interpretations sometimes diverge from what the picturebook maker intended, and that each reading experience is unique. Join our community to get personalised book suggestions, extracts straight to your inbox, 10% off RRPs, and to change children’s lives. The story is heartbreaking, but Milner has matched her illustrations and text perfectly, allowing the reader to get a sense of hope and encouragement. Kate Milner’s exceptional title, My name is not Refugee’invites readers to experience the journey of the refugee.
