About this deal

I found the sound quality to be useable for everyday TV viewing in a living room but it lacks any large soundstage or weight for movie soundtracks. so while it is possible to set it up by yourself it’ll be much easier if you have another person to lend a hand. features such as eARC and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), plus, Hisense claim VRR support at 48-60Hz, but we were unable to confirm this works via testing. The sound quality was decent from the built-in speakers and certainly good enough if you are not a big movie fan.

To hook up your set-top box or consoles, there are three HDMI ports here, one of which is HDMI eARC so you’ll be able to hook up your soundbar to it as well. The 55A7GQ’s remote control is lightweight, plasticky, and more button-heavy than it probably needs to be. Coverage of the Wide Colour Gamut of DCI-P3 is also good but not quite wide enough at around 90% of full coverage. The VIDAA interface is easy to use and there’s something to be said about an interface that settles for that level of simplicity. It features a Mini LED display that’s packed with 10,000 LED units that should allow this TV to display brightness and contrast with much more precision. However, we found that living with the U7QF didn’t highlight any major issues with the vast majority of content we viewed, it was only really noticeable with some tricky film content. Film viewing was also a good experience with SDR content looking colourful and with plenty of dynamic range. To prop up the 50-inch model, the stand is one bar that stretches out and around the front of the TV, it won’t suit everyone’s cabinets because it does take up a fair amount of space.

The Vidaa U interface is definitely one of the better TV operating systems, it’s made by Hisense so suits this set very well. As a mid-range LCD TV with an LED backlight and Quantum Dot technology it provides decent looking image quality with everyday TV viewing, has worthy gaming capabilities and can also playback most HDR standards to a satisfactory level. As such we feel it deserves a recommendation on those merits, hardcore enthusiasts probably need to look elsewhere, but you already knew that.

The uuid2 cookie is set by AppNexus and records information that helps in differentiating between devices and browsers. You’ll be able to access all of the best streaming services including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Britbox, as well as catch up services like BBC iPlayer and the ITV hub. As the next set after the flagship U8QF Quantum Series, though, you should expect more than last year’s affordable U7B ULED.

There are a few interesting extras, including UEFA TV, alongside stalwarts such as Rakuten and Chili, but to fill those missing gaps you will need to purchase a media streamer and plug it into one of those four HDMI sockets.

so well below the visible threshold of three and we couldn’t see any issues with TV and film viewing. What you can do, though, is link up the television to a soundbar via HDMI ARC and hear the surround sound format the way it was meant to (that is, if it’s a Dolby Atmos speaker you’ve plugged into it). The button placement is intuitive and everything you need to control the TV and change settings is all well laid out and easy to find.

Any off-board soundbar with a sub will better the performance, but as a workhorse for normal TV duties, the onboard system is certainly good enough to start with. Running it side by side with a number of rival screens, though, confirms that it’s actually delivering peak brightness levels only in line with other budget sets, and substantially lower than those pushed out by most mid-range sets. It’s also worth noting that the Hisense U7QF opens on an HDMI input when you turn it on – handy for gamers or those using a streaming stick or 4K Blu-ray player most of the time, but possibly irritating for those who just want to go to the home screen at startup.Moving to actual viewing material and we found the image quality and accuracy to be very good on the U7QF. If you are an enthusiast you will be aware of the downfalls with LCD technologies and using them in a dark room, and there is no difference here, but as a living room workhorse the Hisense is very good indeed. Dialogue is intelligible with all content types but the overall sound quality is a little boxed in and lacking any real dynamic range.
