Her example as a married woman unafraid to have affairs gives her courage to try out her own forays of the heart while pressing for a divorce. Bolstered by her success, she indulges in affairs, including one with “Denys” who was immortalised by Karen Blixen in Out of Africa. What can we really know from all the poses and roles that people from real life leave behind in letters or memories of those around them?

Circling The Sun | By The Book Book Review: Circling The Sun | By The Book

I’d feared a slight book, but, instead, it was intricate and ambitious, with a huge cast of characters and luscious descriptions. Who knows if it's an accurate depiction, but Beryl felt real, multidimensional and -- although struggling against the norms -- grounded in her historical context.Beryl is torn between two worlds -an English girl born at the turn of the twentieth century, she is also naturally and thoroughly wild. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west in 1936, but she was a pioneer in many more ways, including being the first licensed female horse trainer in Kenya. Most of their time is spent drinking, taking drugs, hunting, and having sex with one another, including each other's husbands and wives. Karen is his main woman, who spends her time pining for him when he isn't around and trying to force him into a marriage when he is. She had so much nerve and pluck, plunging fearlessly into vast gaps between the sexes, and at a time when such feats were nearly unthinkable.

Robert Redford is at his best as Denys Fitch Hatton, and I do a mean imitation of Meryl Streep's awfully accented, "I had a farm in Africa. Y.Lee flute, bass clarinet, alto, baritone, soprano saxes, Chris O’Connor harp, Finn Scholes trumpet, trombone, vibraphone and Ben Turla acoustic bass, with David Afase, Samara Alofa, Crystal Chen, AJ Fata, Abigail Aroha Jensen, Kenny Sterling, Navakatoa Tekela-Pule and Lisa ‘Romi’ Wright forming the choir.I have seen this attitude played out by many women who came of age in the 60's and 70's, as they fought through social barriers and professional barricades.

The story is book-ended with her famous flight, but the meat is in the middle which spins out Markham’s life from early childhood to her early thirties. Markham's true life was incredibly adventurous, and it's easy for readers to identify with this woman who refused to be pigeonholed by her gender.

Paula McLain's latest novel, narrating the life and times of pioneering aviator and horse racer Beryl Markham, is labeled as historical fiction that transports readers "to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Flying demanded more courage and faith than I actually posessed, and it wanted my best, my whole self. Many questionable decisions and lifestyles, but at least none of the characters are cookie-cutter perfect or predictable.

To honor his memory, Beryl decides to undertake the feat of becoming the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west, non-stop, and solo. By giving us a glimpse into her future, the author sets us up for an amazing journey as I found myself asking: How on Earth is this where Beryl ends up? Her independent spirit fostered by her aloneness as she ran wild as a child and which couldn't be tamed by school, by her father or her husbands is beautiful to see , I have to say. The writing is flawless – reading this literature is like holding a strand of pearls in your hand – silky smooth and warm .Not long after arriving, her mother leaves with her brother and Beryl seems to grow up rather wild, in the wild. In a brilliant move, McLain hardly focuses at all on the trans-Atlantic flight that made the aviator so famous, choosing instead to explore what happened before: Markham's unorthodox childhood in Kenya, a failed marriage, and a star-crossed love affair with Denys Finch Hatton. After discussing it with my book group and meeting the author, I liked it better, but still the subject, anything to do with Hemmingway, was not for me.
