Hessian 1.37 MTR X 46 MTR Frost Protection ROLL Builders Hessian 1.37 MTR X 46 MTR Frost Protection

In general, hardy plants can survive outside in winter while tender ones won't. But it's not quite as simple as that because the temperature in cities is higher than in the countryside, and the north of the UK is colder than the south. If in doubt, err on the side of caution and protect your plants. To prevent frost-drying, add a layer of mulch around the plant and water on frost-free days. Frost drought leads to water deficiency in plants because the leaves transpire water but are unable to absorb new water due to frozen soil and eventually wither. Shallow-rooted plants, such as rhododendrons, are especially vulnerable. This is due to the fact that their roots do not penetrate deep into the soil, where plant-available water can be found.

The temperature at which plants should be covered varies according to the season and the plant’s characteristics. Plants that are very hardy may not need any additional frost protection. Some, on the other hand, are vulnerable to frost damage between autumn and spring and others only in spring. Because not all plants are equally frost-hardy, always tailor your frost protection to the situation. Autumn marks the beginning of the frost protection season. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and the temperature. The first frosts of the season usually occur on clear, windless nights – make sure you have frost protection measures in place by then. As with plants brought indoors, keep an eye out for dampness and rot. The straw can become waterlogged so if a wet spell is expected, put a waterproof cover over the plant – sheets of plastic will do. Make sure you don't keep them there for the whole season though as they won’t allow the plants to breathe and rot is almost guaranteed. Even with hessian or fleece, whenever the weather's mild, undo the ties, remove the straw and give the plant a good airing.

It may sound a little counter-intuitive, but watering your garden before an exceptionally chilly evening can help protect plants from frost damage. Stressed, thirsty plants are more susceptible to frost damage. Also, damp soil provides superior insulation, holds in heat, and freezes less deeply than dry soil.Frost doesn’t impact all plants equally. Plants are characterized by the degree of cold temperatures they can tolerate, classified as either “hardy” or “tender”. To protect potted plants from frost, move them to a more sheltered location such as indoors, against the house or under eaves, to a covered porch or greenhouse, or even under the shelter of a large tree. Clustering many potted plants together also helps. Mobility is a definite perk when it comes to winterizing potted plants! Not every plant needs to be protected from low temperatures, but frost protection is especially important for sensitive plants, for example:
