I had a safe and happy childhood half an hour from central London. I went to a boys’ grammar school, and English was the one subject that I really enjoyed. I met teachers who cared passionately about literature, and instilled some kind of work-ethic. But I think my books have emerged from much later experiences – the wildness of teaching overseas, and – in the case of ‘Trash’ – the enormity of meeting street kids. A kindhearted 22-year-old British volunteer at the Pascal Aguila Mission School on the Behala landfill. And the book is told through the different characters POV which I usually like. But the writing wasn't that great therefore it didn't draw me in. The name is derived from the fact that the two million tonnes of waste, when in the process of decomposition, creates too high temperature that the mountain appears to be smoking or in fire. I had no chance to be there but my Sociology professor in the 80's told us in class that the houseflies were as big as dragonflies. One of the most exciting and original novels of the year . . . It's a tight, thrilling story, told from various characters' perspectives and has a S lumdog, feel-good pulse beating through it. This is a perfect Middle School book! It is about how three friends found a way out of poverty in the most unusual of circumstances --a modern day rags to riches. It is narrated in turns by all the main characters and some secondary ones, and this revolving-door style works well, reflecting the interdependence of the kids as they solve clues to right a wrong and improve their lot in life. Exciting and fast moving as the story is, it also tugs at your heartstrings and reminds the reader that there are many young people for whom this way of life is reality. Unmissable! The problem of child-labour, child-exploitation is vast and it doesn’t go away when you feel sad, and make a donation to charity. I often think of Kurt Vonnegut’s ‘Slaughterhouse 5’ and his intention to make it an anti-war novel. A friend says, with withering scorn: ‘Why not write an anti-glacier novel?’ He means, of course, that a puny book purporting to oppose epic, natural forces is a pathetic thing – and I’m sure he’s right. That doesn’t stop you writing, though. I can’t account for why so many people have billions, whilst billions of people have nothing. I can’t find an ideology that makes sense of it. All I can do is respond to the specific details I see, with a story.
