About this deal

It would seem impossible that the weighty subject of trauma could be explored so thoroughly in a comic book format. Yet this pairing of text and image so perfectly balances academic rigor, whimsical design, and engaging little narratives. At its heart, this book beautifully inspires the reader to see personal trauma as an opportunity for healing and growth. Nkem Ndefo It would seem impossible that the weighty subject of trauma could be explored so thoroughly in a comic book format. Yet this pairing of text and image so perfectly balances academic rigor, whimsical design, and engaging little narratives. At its heart, this book beautifully inspires the reader to see personal trauma as an opportunity for healing and growth. Finally, the book gives some practical ways to help you rid yourself of pain; physical but especially mental things that medical specialists never seem to suggest. The drawings are wonderful, but the way the subject is introduced and explained is confusing and repetitive, unfortunately. Why explain something with images and then an almost unrelated thing underneath in red captions, and split in 2? Life-altering info is made to look like footnotes! Also, ‘Brian’ is not brain.

I also teach and travel all over the world. My main projects are in London, Switzerland, Ireland and Scandinavia. There are two main strands to my teaching; helping therapists developing expertise in touch and presence via ‘biodynamic craniosacral therapy’, and, promoting ‘Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises TRE®’ as a simple, but powerful self-regulation tool. Appreciating the hidden stories and protective reflexes working hard to protect you can transformative for many people. It is possible to learn to self regulate intense feelings. Feeling is hard. But if you can’t feel, it is very hard to heal. Here it is. Published in 2016, Steve Haines' graphic distillation of what trauma is and how we can mend some of its effects is loaded with wisdom. It's as if Haines was invited into the minds of sages like Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, and Stephen Porges, and drew out the essence of what we need to know.i think i'm a little disapppinted i was disappointed with this book. even knowing it was a slim volume, it was slimmer than i anticipated. the format and layout are nice, the text and illustrations good. it feels and looks nice in the hand. but the content left me desiring more. I’ve been struggling to get through the novel All’s Well by Mona Awad, which centers on a protagonist with chronic pain. I haven’t been sure how to feel about the characterization of this experience, so I turned to this little comic I bought years ago for some facts. This universal human experience is one of the most confusing symptom to deal with in the medical practice. Sometimes it's not even regarded seriously. You can't measure pain but it IS real to the person suffering it. From the archives, audio from a webinar on Anxiety is Really Strange on 27 Apr 2022. You can also view as a video podcast

Trauma is Really Strange by Steve Haines | Hachette UK

This podcast explores models around stress, trauma and appeasement. One of the core themes is that being aware of habitual survival gestures can help us become more resilient. Dissociation is the hidden mystery of trauma, by learning to be grounded we can put the brakes on overactive threat detections responses. When something traumatic happens to us, we dissociate and our bodies shut down their normal processes. This unique comic explains the strange nature of trauma and how it confuses the brain and affects the body. Sophie Standing is an illustrator and designer, specialising in human sciences. Her style combines digital and hand-made, with an emphasis on rich colour, textures and metaphorical concepts.

Best of all, Haines makes it clear -- based on his excellent research and distillation of facts -- that trauma is a whole-person, visceral, body-based experience, and so are the best medicines for it.

Yet this pairing of text and image so perfectly balances academic rigor, whimsical design, and engaging little narratives. I got into yoga big time from mid twenties to early forties. This led to the study of massage, shiatsu for 3 years, chiropractic for 5 years and craniosacral therapy 2 years. I shifted in my late twenties to being a full time body worker. There has been a continued fascination on the link between mind and body. I worked with people with mental health issues for 8 years Mind in Camden and Islington – I did advocacy for people with mental health issues. The inequalities in the mental health system deeply informed my awareness of social injustice and power dynamics of mad vs sane

it's a really basic introduction to some of the ways trauma impacts the brain and body. it seemed to start well, but didn't feel like it really delivered. i felt that in its attempt to be relatable to as many people as possible, it pretty much equated trauma with stress. this could be helpful to many... but also misleading/confusing. i was expecting it to deal with more 'life or death' type traumatic events. it referred quite a bit to providing 'trauma releasing exercises', but i felt like it actually offered very little when it came to it - 'shake the stress out' was pretty much the gist of it, and 'be in your body'. it felt like it was busy telling you 'you have the ability to overcome trauma', but not really giving you much to do that with... which taps into alsorts of problematic narratives, especially where many people who have expereince of trauma and PTSD will have tried and felt that they've failed to just 'get over it'.
