About this deal

Sometimes the biggest stories come from the smallest beginnings... Meet Tad. She's the smallest tadpole in a big pond, and lives there with all her tadbrothers and tadsisters. Although something else lives there too... BIG BLUB! And when everyone else starts to disappear, Tad starts to wonder if Big Blub will get her too... Or is everyone else going somewhere else; somewhere better? And if so, will Tad ever get there too? A fantastic story with an important message and a wonderful protagonist. This is a book that will suit all children, particularly ones who are a little on the shorter side. It is also quite informative about growth and the wild and learning about tadpoles and how they grow and change. It has a higher word count so will suit slightly older readers, and is meant for children 4+. The smallest tadpole of the group faces her biggest fear in this heartwarming picture book about courage and growth from the bestselling illustrator of Jory John’s Goodnight Already! series, Benji Davies. Like the best picture books, The Storm Whale has an outsize emotional force that often comes from what the author-illustrator Benji Davies leaves out - New York Times

We have loved using this book with EYFS&KS1 children as the words lend themselves so well to the application of phonics (gulp, frog, swish, pond, Blub) and spelling rules for plurals and suffix endings (biggest, faster, tails). There are also some lovely Science links with nature, lifecycles, habitats and growth as well as the PSHE focus on how we are all unique and different. The images alone, will provide plenty of discussion and exploration of life below the surface of the pond.

As children become familiar with the story, they may like to join in with the repeated parts eg ‘smaller than’, the speech sound effects eg GULP! Swoosh- wiggle-swish! and the count down. Talk about the story Tad is a story about a tadpole growing up. It's set in a pond where Tad is worried about the Big Blub that lurks at the bottom in the dark waters. She worries about where all her other tadpole friends are going and what happens to them. The illustrations are beautiful and really add to the story. Overall, this is a very colourful book that will surely appeal to lots of young children. This is a sweet story that would be lovely to share with young children around 5-7, and links into understanding the life cycle of a frog and how tadpoles develop into frogs. Tad by Benji Davies | Waterstones

This picture book story is essentially about being the smallest and the last to grow up, but with the moral that you'll get there in the end, maybe faster than you think. The author bio says that he "aims to capture what childhood feels like" and I think a yearning for growing up, as is the want of the title character, certainly falls into that category. As all of the other tadpoles start to grow into frogs, i feel sad for Tad as he believes they are all gone and have all been caught by the 'big blub' fish. At the end of the book, when Tad is reunited with his friends as Frogs i felt happiness. Through my feelings throughout the book i was able to see that i had connected emotionally with Tad. Winner of the 2020 Oscar's Book Prize and from the award-winning creator of The Storm Whale and Granddad's Island, Tad is the perfect story for everyone who's ever grown up, or still has a way to go...
