About this deal

The finish is long, rich, and more of the same: ages of Raisins, Candied Figs, Prunes, and Brown Sugar - but here with a touch of butter. To my mind, this incarnation of El Dorado 12 is better than its predecessor but isn't going to wow the masses in the same way. I also think that, at this price point, it is one of the better rums around. With that said, I'd happily a bit more for a 12 year old with a greater percentage of the pot still. This would probably put it in line with quality and price of some other good rums (I want to mention Doorly's 12, though I've not had it recently, so don't quote me on that).

Review: El Dorado Rums – 12, 15, and 21 Years Old Review: El Dorado Rums – 12, 15, and 21 Years Old

In mouth you get some spice, oak and sweet flavours. Pretty strong but smoothe. There is a lot of things going on. The El Dorado 21 Year is smooth in the throat and has quite a long smoothe aftertaste with oak, spice and vanilla. Distinctive and different - perhaps it's those wooden stills - this is layers of molasses, a dry but gentle woodiness, and noticable edge of something almost liquorice. There's an edge too, of what I can only describe as dirty. To my delightful surprise the palate matches the nose exactly, deep rich flavors of Raisins, Brown Sugar, faint Pipe Tobacco, Candied Figs, and Prunes. But in an interesting twist in addition to all the rich earthy notes present on the nose, the palate also includes a wonderful rich Toffee note. This is quite delightful. So at first glance this is a revisitation of an old classic. However, it is in fact a new review of a new rum. That’s because in 2020 El Dorado decided to revamp their entire lineup and, to the near universal delight of the rum community, they decided remove or severely limit the amount of added sugar they used to add to their bottlings. In the case of this rum, it contains 0gpL of added sugar. I have no idea how they did it, but this is even better than the previous added sugar version. The most likely scenario is that El Dorado was simply changing with their market and realizing that the rum community is trending towards purity rather than sweetness. But what I find with this rum, (and maybe what they also realized), is that their rum is just absolutely fantastic all by its own. No sugar is needed. In fact, now having had both, and even though I enjoyed the previous iteration, this new pure version is FAR superior in every way. It is richer, earthier, fruitier, and fuller than it was. This is the best commercially available aged Demerara that I have enjoyed by some margin. Well done DDL!

El Dorado Rum 15 Year Old - The Whisky Exchange

This is what I serve first to friends who haven't experienced 'good rum.' It sets a high bar and rarely fails to please. Many will find it slightly on the sweet side, but not as much as, say Diplomatico. The flavor is highly complex and alluring. If I could afford it, I'd drink this more regularly. Allthough the price point probably makes me savor it more as a rare treat. I taste caramel, tobacco, toffee, light citrus, and bananas enveloped in a rich smooth sweetness. El Dorado isn’t Rum in the Raw, though: It’s a smooth and sophisticated rum that’s well worth seeking out. Available in nearly a dozen variations, I tried three of its oldest bottlings. All are 80 proof. This rum has to rest a few minutes before you drink it. A lot of flavors shows up after 15 minutes or so. A nice formula is to always let the rum rest for as many year old it is. 15 years old rum have to rest for 15 minutes in the glass. I didn't think I'd come across a bottle of this considering how limited the selections in the regional liquor stores are. However one store had this behind the counter on the top shelf and I had enough cash on hand to get a bottle. I the mouth the El Dorado 15 is surprisingly spicy with sweet fruit and a little hint of vanilla. You also get a little bit of smoke and barrel, but just a little bit. This rum is very well balanced. El Dorado 15 has quite high alcoholic content (43%) but you don´t sense that at all.
