You do not read a book like this purely for pleasure, at least I can't think of many people who would. I have been slowly going through it to remind myself of some Business Analysis techniques which I've got a bit rusty on, for professional reasons. This is a thorough coverage of the role of the BA, and includes much useful material and pointers to further resources, but it is a little dull. Worthy and reasonably comprehensive rather than pithy, fun reading!

This chapter is titled ‘validating and managing requirements’ previously validating was included within the establishing requirements chapter and managing was included within the documentation of requirements chapter. This has all now been moved into this chapter. This now means that there are more details on validation including agile validation as well as more detail on the managing of requirements including configure router configuration, identification control as well as agile control. However all in all, this is a fairly short chapter. There is now a new section covering the T shaped business analyst that fits in just before the competencies of the business analyst.

Under the situation investigation problem analysis we now have ‘investigate the situation’, ‘understand the strategic context’, ‘identify and articulate business needs’, ‘define problem’, ‘define scope’ and ‘define the rationale’. There is a significant section added with the name of ‘Business Analysis Service’. This includes the BASF framework details. This edition remains true to the essence of business analysis: the need to explore situations, determine where problems lie, engage with stakeholders, consider options and guide the development of relevant solutions. However, the business analysis landscape is constantly evolving and maturing so some topics have been introduced while others have been replaced. Key examples include: Malcolm Eva has been involved in IS development since 1980, working as a programmer, systems analyst and then business analyst. As well as practising in the public and private sectors, he has taught at Greenwich University, Northampton University and Gloucestershire University, in the Information Systems departments, and spent several years delivering training in business analysis. He is the author of SSADM – A User’s Guide, co-author with Steve Skidmore of Introducing Systems Development and of a number of papers on systems development, business analysis and requirements engineering. He is a BCS examiner in business analysis and solution development. Malcolm contributed to Chapter 5 (Investigating the business situation) and Chapter 10 (Establishing the requirements). FOREWORD Students can ask questions using a headset, webcam or a chat window, and get their questions answered, just like in a traditional classroom. Questions can be lined up and answered at intervals, without interrupting the teacher’s flow of thought. There is no difference in the level of interaction – in fact distractions are significantly reduced because of this way of teaching. Our trainers have a minimum of 10 years training experience, plus have previously run and managed live projects, so have real-life experience they bring to the virtual session.

Sharpen your skills. Upgrade your career. Find the right learning path for you, based on your role and skills. Take part in hands-on practice, study for a certification, and much more - all personalized for you.Business analysis was something I simply did, rather than thinking of it as a profession; that was until I went to the launch of the first edition of Business Analysis. As the profession of business analysis continues to evolve and adapt to a changing environment, I’m delighted that this fourth edition continues to lead the way. It remains the ‘go-to’ book and most important guide for professional business analysts. Indispensable and invaluable. A readable and engaging journey through the business change lifecycle, the business analysis services and the toolkit required of a proficient business analyst The picture for business analysis is complex. If organisations are to grasp the opportunities and deflect or manage the threats from their external environment, they need to employ analytical thinking skills more than ever and ensure that scarce investment funds are spent wisely. They need to consider the ‘what if?’ and also the ‘what else?’ questions if they are to really grasp the potential that digital technologies offer. Our business analysis experiences have confirmed that it is not the case that everyone can offer analytical thinking skills. The techniques used in business analysis are numerous and varied, and have to be applied with expertise if they are to offer innovations and insights, and enable beneficial outcomes. They also need to be accompanied by interpersonal competence and business domain understanding, coupled with the knowledge of how the organisation works. For me the biggest change in the book is the Business Analysis Service Framework as the Business Analysis Process Model has been dropped in its favour. This is broken down as follow :

Business Analysis by Debra Paul, James Cadle | Waterstones

Assessing feasibility has been removed from the previous chapter and now added into the business case chapter. Also added is a section called business case within an agile context. I’ve used this book throughout my career and it is more complete than ever, covering the whole spectrum of activities in the BA-discipline. It is a very useful combination of available techniques and best practices on how to use them. It is a must-read for every business change professional. The section covering developing business analysis skills has been altered but to no real significant effect and there is a part at the end talking about the industry qualifications concentrating on the BCS versions. Under the business acceptance testing the following sections are found ‘agreed scope of testing’, ‘define test scenarios’ and ‘provide support for stakeholders when testing’.
