About this deal

We also started questioning the logic that these compostable poo bags 'prevent plastic ending up in landfills and the ocean' - a common marketing trope. After asking our customers we found practically no one was composting compostable poo bags and over 95% were disposing of them in general waste i.e. landfill or incineration. This is in line with other research that shows home composting isn't a viable or scalable solution for compostable plastics. But experts say it goes further than the canine population increase with the rise in discarded dog poo the most visible symptom of a new generation of dog owners. Lizzie Carr, founder of Planet Patrol, the waste data and collection charity, said: “As a paddle boarder I have come across countless dog poo bags carelessly thrown into bushes, lurking on the edges of riverbanks, hung on fences or simply left on the ground.”

After considering the above, we decided to make our poo bags from 20% oyster shell waste, 50% recycled plastic and up to 30% virgin plastic. So instead of making new plastic that contributes to landfill or incineration, we re-use waste (plastic and oyster shells) that was already destined to end up there. In this way, they do genuinely free up landfill space and reduce waste going to incineration overall. Our bags are recyclable, however due to the contents, sadly they cannot be placed in recycling and are intended for general waste! Meanwhile, more than half a million dog owners admit to routinely leaving poo unbagged – while another quarter of a million say they often bag it but then hang it off a tree or put it under a bush rather than binning it, according to another recent report from Keep Britain Tidy, with research from YouGov. So what happens to compostable or biodegradable plastic in landfill? We were horrified to learn that not only would they potentially take years (possibly centuries) to breakdown in landfill, they would also produce methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas. When we spoke with Dr Carly Fletcher, a Bioplastics researcher from Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Fletcher advised the difference between plastic and compostable/biodegradable plastic in incineration was likely negligible. However we found one study showing PBAT (the main ingredient in compostable and biodegradable poo bags) releases significantly more carcinogens than standard plastic when incinerated. So what are the options, considering the above? This alone is bad enough but add in to the equation a small child and a dog that likes to chase a ball; you have entered dog walking hell! Do you:

Rule 2 - Disposing of it in a Responsible Way

One of the concerning things that we’re seeing – along with the apparent increase in dog fouling – is a secondary form of littering in the form of discarded poo bags. Increasingly it seems people are just dumping those, hanging them on trees or leaving them on walls assuming that they’ve done their public duty,” added Dr Newburn, professor of criminology and social policy at the London School of Economics. Many, although by no means all, of these may never have bought dogs if it wasn’t for the pandemic and so may be less committed, experts suggest. Why oyster shells? Oysters are widely considered a sustainable and highly nutritious food source. They are fast growing and clean the water of pollution. Oyster farming provides livelihoods for local communities and men and women of all ages. Unlike the farming of food crops, it does not require the clearing of forest and land, intense water use, pesticides, fertilisers or GMOs. More than half of local authorities reported “an increase in both unbagged dog poo left on the ground and bagged dog poo, for example left hanging from railings or trees” since the start of 2021, in a recent survey by Keep Britain Tidy. So let's say you don't or can't compost your dog's poo at home and like everyone else in the UK, your local council doesn't collect dog poo for industrial composting...

But you're a responsible dog owner who wants to do what they can for the environment and you realise that your poo bag usage is a big contributor to your dog's environmental pawprint. EPA recommends either disposing of dog poop in the trash or flushing it down the toilet, where it will end up at your local sewage treatment center. What To ConsiderThe problem with scaling up is who pays, with few councils keen to foot the bill. J Retinger, PooPrints’ CEO, argues that since pet licensing was abolished, a wider debate on the cost of man’s ever-increasing numbers of best friends is needed. “Communities have to start thinking about the impact of the pet population on our budgets: how are those costs being made up?” If someone does fail to clean up after their pet, it falls to the council to get rid of it. More than 90% of councils have dog wardens.

And it’s not just the tourists – who everyone seems to blame – but the locals as well as I’m finding them in residential areas too,” Ms Beaumont says. Bags of poo collected by Hannah Beaumont on one of her walks (Photo: Hannah Beaumont)

UK facing animal welfare emergency as record number of owners forced to give up their pets

Almost all dog owners will talk about the joy dogs bring to their lives. Not only the companionship and intelligent company that dogs offer, but also the pleasure of daily dog walks. As you exercise your dog (see our favourite dog ball throwers here), you are keeping yourself fit too and there is a huge pleasure in walking familiar routes as well as discovering new places together. Being a responsible dog owner Meanwhile, 54 per cent didn’t go to puppy training and a fifth said they didn’t socialise their new pets with other dogs and people or put them into day-to-day situations outside their home, according to another Kennel Club survey a year later. Typically, training should start as early as possible, once puppies have completed their vaccinations (usually around 12-14 weeks old), but owners can start basic training at home.

The law states that being unaware a dog has fouled or not having a suitable bag is not a reasonable excuse. However, it is vitally important that a puppy is socialised so that they are used to a range of different environment and experiences, and are well-behaved and comfortable around new people, dogs and other pets, while training will help to equip both you and your dog with good manners and basic discipline and control. While most dog owners are caring, responsible individuals, there are still some people who do not clean up after their pets. Part of this new life involved getting a dog for a family pet. As pet owners yourself you will know that along with all the good things a dog can bring to a family they also bring a lot of crap (and I mean that literally). I realised this wasn’t a problem only I suffered, when one day sitting in car after walking my dog I saw 4 other people go through the almost identical ritual I had done 1 hour earlier.Comprehensive dog poo data is fairly thin on the ground, making it difficult to monitor trends with much precision. There is a growing consensus that problem is getting worse again, however. There has never been a better time to go green.
