About this deal

I particularly loved how Paver managed to include fantasy elements in her story, but yet always make them uncertain – part of the beliefs of the people, and taking place in dreams, or places where the mind itself was uncertain – so you can read this story as totally realistic if you want to, while still have this grand fantasy be a huge part of the lives of the characters and their plot. Nearly at their destination, Renn and Torak are recaptured by the Ravens. Hord argues that he should take Torak to the Mountain and sacrifice him there, to appease the World Spirit. Fin-Kedinn however releases Torak, believing him to be the one who should go to the Mountain. Fin-Kedinn also reveals that Torak's Fa was killed because he was the foremost enemy of a group of rogue mages, the Soul Eaters, who turned to evil in their determination to rule the clans. Fin-Keddin also tells Torak that it is his destiny to one day face down and destroy the Soul Eaters. The original six-title series was a huge success and was published in 36 different languages and 37 different territories. The series concluded with Ghost Hunter, but after a 10-year hiatus and pressure from fans, Paver announced a three-book continuation of the series last year. The next instalment, Viper's Daughter, will be published on 2nd April by Zephyr, an imprint of Head of Zeus.

In the interim, she “took a bit of a wrong turn”, becoming a biotechnological patents lawyer for 13 years. “I thought, ‘I’m quite good at exams, why don’t I do law for a couple of years and maybe I’ll be published by then?’” After years of trying to write in the evenings and at weekends, and not really wanting to be a lawyer at all, she “had to jump off the treadmill”. She resigned without a book deal. During her six months’ notice period, she landed one. “My earnings fell off a cliff. I went from six figures to earning less than a student teacher. But it was unbelievable how much it felt like the right thing. I didn’t have to dress up in Armani trouser suits, I could just wear jeans.” This is a children's book that has crossover appeal to adults. It's set 6,000 years ago in a hunter-gathering society that believes in magic, where there are various clans that band together to survive in the forest. The book opens with our hero, a boy who is "twelve summers old," coping with the death of his father who was killed by a demonic bear. That sends the boy on a quest to find a way to kill the bear. A wolf cub becomes his friend and guide, and along with a girl from another clan, they face trials and adventures. It's a coming-of-age story, wrapped up in a quest. A "fellowship of the ring" but with only 3 in the group. Parts are scary. Dark. Not to mention what seems like a mistake that I couldn't overlook throughout the book (other readers of this book, this is actually a question - is it a mistake, or have I misunderstood something?): Torak isn't allowed to mention the name of the dead - his father - for five years after his death, yet later in the book, he does this several times, casually. As a reader, you aren't guided through the feelings of the book, making you feel the same way - you are just forced to accept them, whether you understand them or not. In general throughout the book, you just have to accept a lot of things which could probably have been understood if we knew the characters a bit better. The Wolf Brother series is set in northern Scandinavia 6,000 years after the Ice Age and follows Torak, his friend Renn and his wolf, Wolf. The bond between Torak and Wolf is the heart of the story and the clans featured in the books are based on real hunter-gatherers whose connection with, and respect for the land, resonated with readers. During a "Michelle Live" live stream on YouTube and twitch on 30 March 2020, Paver herself revealed that she has just completed a deal with Kindle Entertainment and Lionsgate and that a live action TV series will be made based on the series. Paver said "I've had more meetings with producers about Wolf Brother than I can remember but Anne Brogan and Melanie Stokes from Kindle Entertainment stood out from the very first time I met them. They knew the series inside out and – a big plus for me – their children were fans. Wolf Brother fans have extremely high expectations for a television series and Anne and Mel share the same burning desire to create a legendary series. I'm entrusting them with the lives of Torak, Renn and Wolf! I know they will be in safe hands." Before they get to the Mountain of the World Spirit, the trio must locate the three pieces of the Nanuak; objects the World Spirit has imbued with power. The Nanuak pieces are found in a river, a cave, and in the hand of a dead man.

As you know, we’ve made a commitment to the Clan to try to make sure that you always are the first people to know about important news concerning Michelle and her work. And as many of you know, in addition to being “admin”, I’m also her agent.

Paver researched extensively while developing the book. In addition to academic study, she travelled to north-eastern Finland, where she trekked with a field guide over 300 miles across the forests. To understand life in the New Stone Age, they used tools and clothing that would have been available 6000 years ago, slept in a traditional laavu shelter in a sleeping bag made of reindeer skin, and ate only foods that Stone-Age hunter-gatherers would have. In addition, she spent time at a wolf reserve studying the wolves and observing their behavior, and also named the main character "Torak" after one of the wolves in the UK Wolf Conservation Trust. The author has a degree in biochemistry and lots of experience with animals, including wolves and bears. But hopefully not bears possessed by an evil spirit. Kindle Entertainment has bought TV and film rights to Michelle Paver's bestselling Wolf Brother series, agency Redhammer Management has announced.

Torak and Wolf, aided by Naiginn's father, Marupai and a young halfman (girl) named Shamik from the Narwhal clan, trace Naiginn and Renn to the Edge of the World, a volcanic opening where an opening to the demonic Otherworld can be found. Naiginn wants to use the power of the Edge of the World to allow Renn to break his curse, but the proximity of flames (counter to Naiginn's nature as an ice demon) weaken him. Renn escapes and Wolf summons the ancient spirits of the long-dead mammoths to hunt the demons, who fear them. Naiginn disappears and Torak, Renn, Wolf and Shamik (eager to escape the abuse she suffers from the Narwhals) return to the Forest. However, although they promise to tell each other the truth from that moment onwards, Renn does not tell Torak that she is still seeing visions of Seshru.I enjoyed it well enough, but it's really written for kids. I'd have loved it more in about 5th grade. PLOT (no major spoilers): A suddenly-orphaned youth and his wolf cub are destined to save the world from a malevolent demonic bear. As his father (Fa) is dying, having been mawled by the bear, 12-year-old Torak makes him a promise: To journey into the frozen North, to the tallest mountain, home of the World Spirit, and plead for help. Only this Spirit is powerful enough to defeat such a demon. Torak must also offer sacrifices to the World Spirit, including his own heart's blood. (He wonders, "All of it??") No one has ever seen The World Spirit, nor traveled that far North and lived to tell about it. Torak is frightened and frequently tempted to break his promise, but he keeps his word (another moral of the story). Help comes from Renn, a resourceful girl with a quiver full of arrows and many insightful ideas. However, their journey is perilous. Horrible obstacles slow them down, including a disgusting old man, a Walker.
