Description

The studio is centred around an ultra rare vintage Neve 5316 analogue console from the early 70s, which we modified to have moving fader automation. We have a gorgeous Bosendorfer 225 grand piano, plus Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond C3 and some nice vintage synths. Also a few great drum kits like our 80s Sonorlite and 1971 Ludwig Super Classic. Yeah, the Aurora (n). I love it! I had been using a Prism Orpheus for about 8 years, but upgrading my Mac meant that I needed to upgrade my converters too because the Firewire conversion was too buggy.

London‑based retailers and distributors Funky Junk Ltd are among Europe's leading suppliers of recording equipment and services, and they have been involved in equipping and designing studio facilities all over the world during the past two decades. When managing director Mark Thompson heard that the space which eventually would become Snap Studios was available for lease, he was immediately intrigued. Having spent his entire working life in and around recording studios, he saw the potential of the space, and he took the opportunity to build a recording venue which would, he hoped, excel in all aspects, and which would serve as a 'shop window' for Funky Junk as well. I think plugins have got so ridiculously good these days and there are some fantastic ones out there. I always used to say that my favourite plugin was Pro Tools 7 band EQ, but that’s now been replaced by the FabFilter Pro-Q3. I think it’s probably my most used plugin. It’s just incredible what you can do with it. I find it so musical and dynamic - it’s essential for me these days. Lorem ipsum, or lipsum as it is sometimes known, is dummy text used in laying out print, graphic or web designs. The passage is attributed to an unknown typesetter in the 15th century who is thought to have scrambled parts of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum for use in a type specimen book. I’ve worked with UAD for a long time too, I love how they operate and think they sound fantastic. I’m a big fan of all the Kush Audio plugins, plus I love the BX Townhouse bus compressor. My mix bus will often feature a Novatron, and Townhouse. Recycling? I’ve been doing this with a passion for decades. I never imagined it would grown into a multinational business, though.Overall, it’s pretty incredible that such a large booth can fold up and be transported so simply, then be set up again wherever you want. This also works great for small apartments or places where room is limited. Simply store it after your session is done, instead of having a permanent vocal booth taking up valuable floor space. Even if you have a top-quality microphone and headphones, good gear can only take you so far when recording your voice on the road without proper insulation surrounding you. That’s where a portable recording booth, also called a vocal isolation booth, can make or break your vocal takes. We will take reasonable technical and organizational precautions to prevent the loss, misuse, or alteration of your personal information. Do you have any tips for managing (and maintaining) the balance between the creative 'vibe' and the more analytical process of mixing/engineering? We’ve always wanted to provide the best possible service we can, and a huge part of that is the care and attention that we’ve tried to keep in the place. It’s definitely a labour of love!

For Sound Quality — Snap Studio uses the highest quality Pro Sound insulation blankets to efficiently absorb reverb, leaving vocals dry and clear. Hear the difference instantly and sing goodbye to poor acoustics and boxy vocals associated with cheap 180 degree vocal shields and Snap Studio copycats. We’ve also got loads of top outboard including Urei 1176s, LA2A, EAR 660, Pultec, Lang and Decca EQs, Decca limiters, Roland Tape Echoes as well as EMT plates and a unique tile room echo chamber. There has already been so many great records that have come out of the studio, and we want that to continue for as long as possible! Whilst it’s nothing overly elaborate, my setup contains a few choice pieces of gear that I know very well. I have built a comfortable space with a Primacoustic acoustic kit, and bought some decent solid speaker stands. It goes without saying but it’s really important to focus on getting your monitoring right before you even consider anything else. That doesn’t mean it has to be perfect, but making the mixing environment as flat as practically possible within budget and space is essential. Join us for a LIVE Q&A with Marco on Friday, where we'll be taking a closer look at engineering from home, essential gear and more. Got a question? Let us know on Facebook. It’s usually quite a straightforward process because I work in Pro Tools on all my rigs, so really it’s just the I/O settings will need to be tweaked for the setup I’m using. If it’s something I’ve recorded at Snap then the main considerations are that the sessions leave the studio in a good shape before I take them to work anywhere else. This involves proper labelling, annotation on takes, comment-box notes for anything that might need attention as well as colour labelling of regions which I might need to refer to. The colours of the regions can be really important when building comps – especially if you’re going through lots of takes of something. I think a lot of the newer producers in that time came to realise that there are some things which can only be done right with good spaces, and the right equipment/environment/skilled engineers to capture those sounds. Running a studio involves a lot more than just the recording. There’s maintenance, upgrades, and general upkeep to consider too. Snap was never intended to be a money making venture at all, but money always has to be considered, of course.

I’ve worked with the old Lynx Aurora’s for years and made a few records with them and always thought they were decent quality, but when I tried out the Aurora (n) I was absolutely blown away. The stereo image, depth and speed grabbed me instantly. Snap Studio Users Have Spoken

The live area in Snap Studio 1. The control room in Studio 1 is based around a vintage Neve console. Not only is Snap full of rare outboard processors and effects, but it also features a real echo chamber. A pair of Pye limiters and two Decca compressors, which came from a mastering console in Nigeria. Rare outboard at Snap includes a pair of blue Allotrope mic preamps, two Rosser EQs which once belonged to Mayfair Studios, and an LA2A copy which came from Moulin Rouge in Paris. Studio 2 is suitable for editing and overdubbing, and it also hosts an impressive synth collection, including a Yamaha CS80 (left). Snap is home to a number of desirable microphones, including a Neumann U47 that was used for recording Miles Davis by the previous owner.Snap Studios opened in early 2011, and in its short yet extremely busy history, its success shows that he, studio manager Marco Pasquariello and their staff must have made a lot of right decisions. Their work has garnered accolades including a Music Producers Guild Studio Of The Year award in 2013. More Than Meets The Eye Some of the better known names would be Kate Bush, Stormzy, Craig David, Clean Bandit, FKA Twigs and Liam Gallagher. Liam’s album was his debut record, and it went straight in at Number 1! We were really proud of that one.
