About this deal

So, in the last section I went over the basics of mixing a skin tone. Four colors. Simple, right? Now I’m going to tell you how to break them. Just using four colors, and their derivative, ‘Flesh Tone’, will not get you the full range of human skin colors. Different skin has different hues and saturations. People are varied. A shade of thinned Carroburg Crimson makes lighter skin look inflamed and flushed, and darker skin ruddy and warmer I've got a bunch of models on my gaming table right now that I painted over the past month where I used tan primers and also a bunch I did using Wraithbone, White, etc. I'll try to get some pictures taken and will post them here so you can actually see some examples and see if you can tell any major difference. The second is light that hits the skin and bounces off, taking on the color of the actual surface of the skin. This is somewhat self explanatory, and the most similar to painting non skin-based objects.

The Chosen Axes set is from Games Workshop’s easy-to-build range and so putting these together was very simple. However, this did mean that there wasn’t any options with how I put them together and the bases were already modeled—I usually like to create a different textured base that fits through the whole warband and ties the models together, so I would have to decide if I wanted to keep these pre-modeled bases or remove them and add my own later. Seraphim Sepia makes things yellow – beware of overdoing this lest your skin take on a jaundiced look. I've started speed painting a new army using mostly contrast paints. Apparently, GW still can't manage to get their s... together and has horrendous delivery problems with their products, especially paints. For a basic example, consider a less extreme example of the weird sea elf colors in Games Workshop’s color range. By taking a touch of grey and mixing it into your flesh tone, then highlighting up from there using flesh tone (or even white, depending on the look you want to achieve), you will get a skin tone that is much more desaturated than one that has more red/orange tones in it.Contrast paints mixed 1:1 with Contrast or Lahmian Medium will turn your paint into a wash or glaze – great for creating unique washes that you can’t find anywhere else.

Wow, well the best answer I can give is that with some Contrast colors there's almost no difference, with others there is "some" difference. Don’t apply Contrast paints too thinly or else the medium can’t do its magic. Apply them generously and soak up excess paint instead. Glaze 4:1 Reikland Fleshshade:Mephiston Red heavily thinned on flushed areas, then retouch final highlightNot all Contrast paints are created equal. The lighter colours are thinner and feel more like washes, while the darker colours can be a little flat with less visible highlights. Some colours dry smoother, some tend to be more patchy.

But any white, off-white, tan, light or medium gray primers will work. In the end all it really does is slightly to moderately affect the final shade of the Contrast color. Like for example, putting Guilliman Flesh over a tan primer might give you slightly darker flesh than using say Wraithbone. On the other hand using Guilliman Flesh over a pure white primer will create lighter flesh.Glaze 4:1 Druchii Violet: Khorne Red heavily thinned on flushed areas, then retouch final highlight Contrast paints really benefit from a smooth primer (as do washes, as you can see). I also applied Guilliman Flesh over Wraithbone base paint. As a lot of layers were needed for perfect coverage, the finish wasn’t as smooth as with Wraithbone spray primer. You can see the Guilliman Flesh dried more uneven because of that. Sealing the surface with a coat of satin varnish might help to reduce this effect. So far in my quest to build, paint and battle as many warbands as I can I have managed to assemble:
