Cookbooks with no photos are a pet peeve of mine. The journey to write this novel took me four years, six drafts, and a LOT of stress, but I came off a better writer and now I have an agent! Here’s how I wrote my second novel with some extra advice for writers at the end. Idea – 2017

This is actually more than just a cookbook of cookie recipes as there are also recipes for many other baked treats included and like the title suggests: brownies, bars, etc......which from my point of view is a win-win scenario.

Benevolent Boss: Mike proves to be one to Dilly, being friendly, encouraging and not getting mad even if she messes something up. Control Freak: Gerry. I read as I was cooking, and my daughter ended up going to bed an hour late because I just had to finish the book! What a great story - I mean, I knew it all already - the horrible bullying schoolmates, not a happy home, but then escape and new friends and everything ends well. And yet... and yet... it's the characters that make the story, isn't it? Beauty with her gentle nature, and her mother - essentially that stupid "babe" that people laugh at usually - but a wonderful warm mother, her father, another deliciously evil villain character complicated by the fact that he is her father, and he does love her, albeit in his twisted way. And the others - snotty rich kids, Mike the painter and the kids in the new school. And Sam and Lily. Now before every recipe is a little blurb about where the idea or concept came from. Personally, I love learning about how bakers come up with flavors or the history behind a family recipe. The recipes are perfect for both beginners and seasoned professionals. Not only are the recipes delicious, but they also have a nice variety, flavor, and creativity. Most of the measurements in the book are made according to volume instead of weight. Moreover, all the techniques are accompanied by instructions and photos to never feel lost.Embarrassing First Name: Beauty regards her first name as this for most of the story. In the end, she doesn’t seem to mind it so much, after meeting a girl with an equally embarrassing first name: Princess. Together, they decide to form an Unusual Names Club. Dilly also considers her given name of Dilys as utterly ridiculous, assuming her mother “thought it sounded posh” and usually goes by Dilly. Everyone Has Standards: Arabella's mother comes across as a bit patronising but doesn't seem to think much of Gerry, notices Dilly's embarrassment when he tells her to "quit burbling" and tries to smooth it over.

When I tried, I realized those scenes were not tied to my MC’s arc. I had to make a choice: delete them and go full Romance or figure out how to tie the plots together. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. However, he was capable of some truly awful things. It was nice to see a character in a younger child's book rendered in many different shades of grey. It’s the start of a new school year at Honeycutt Elementary and that means one thing: student council elections!I focused only on these scenes, and by the end I’d reached my goal! My draft was now around 88K. Fifth Draft – Oct 2020 to Feb 2021 This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'. Rhona Marshall: The only classmate who is nice to Beauty but is unable to be her best friend as she already best friends with Skye though she wishes otherwise.
