Description

I’m not an expert on how human eyes work. But at a basic level, human eyes are designed to see light as it refracts through the air. Thus, we can’t simply submerge our bare eyes underwater without changing how our eyes see light through the water instead of air. A bathyscope (or similar tool like goggles) allows us to submerge our “viewpoint” underwater without the water directly touching our eyes and changing how the eye focuses on the view. Place a piece of plastic wrap over one end of the can or container and hold it tightly in place with a rubber band. When the fish gets it I set the hook with my hand,” Dobson says. “Then I can drop the Flogger, because it floats, then grab the rod and reel it in.” He says the best way to learn to evaluate fish size is to look at the fish through the scope, study its form while considering the depth and distance away, and then catch it and weigh it. Over time, you’ll develop your eye.

Bathyscopes like the Flogger are specialty tools that, as described, are extremely valuable for finding deep bedding smallmouths in air-clear water. If you don’t live in the Upper Midwest, Canada, the Great Lakes, New England or other areas where those scenarios are common, a scope might still have some uses. A bathyscaphe ( / ˈ b æ θ ɪ ˌ s k eɪ f, - ˌ s k æ f/) is a free-diving, self-propelled deep-sea submersible, consisting of a crew cabin similar to a Bathysphere, but suspended below a float rather than from a surface cable, as in the classic Bathysphere design. A slightly more complicated construction, a periscope will allow you to see (or photograph) underwater at a 90° angle, as if you were snorkelling - whilst staying dry! He died in 2008 in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland at the age of 86. His son, Bertrand Piccard, has carried on the family legacy by setting the record for the first non-stop balloon flight around the world in 1999.

The float is filled with gasoline because it is readily available, buoyant, and, for all practical purposes, incompressible. The incompressibility of the gasoline means the tanks can be very lightly constructed, since the pressure inside and outside the tanks equalises, eliminating any differential. By contrast, the crew cabin must withstand a huge pressure differential and is massively built. Buoyancy at the surface can be trimmed easily by replacing gasoline with water, which is denser. [ citation needed] Among my favourite mysteries of the natural world is Bathysphaera intacta, a 6ft fish said to resemble a large barracuda. The new species was supposedly spotted by the explorer and naturalist William Beebe in 1932 at a depth of 640 metres (2100 ft) off the coast of Nonsuch Island in the Bermuda archipelago. We have no photograph of the fish and the only image that exists was drawn by Else Bostelmann, a German-born American artist, who accompanied Beebe on his expedition. Bostelmann never descended into the ocean’s depths; her drawings, based on Beebe’s descriptions, are 20th-century marine equivalents of Dürer’s Rhinoceros, creatures that the artist had never seen first-hand. If I’m lying on my belly, I can do that with that Ultrex more so now,” he says. “In the past you could only do that on a calm day when the wind wasn’t blowing.”

Following the successful bathyscaphe testing, Jacques Piccard and his father spent the early 1960s focusing on designing and building mesoscaphes, meant for exploring the middle depths of the ocean. Jacques tested his first mesoscaphe, named the Auguste Piccard, in 1964. Their work would result in the first manned journey to the deepest part of the ocean, some seven miles beneath the surface using a bathyscaphe. That’s 7,000 feet deeper than Mount Everest is tall. Cut both ends of your chosen tub or bottle to make the main body of the bathyscope. If you've got a pipe, then both ends will already be open. If you've chosen a tub or bottle, you will need to remove the bottom. Make sure the end you will use to view has no sharp edges as it will be close to your face. I had two areas [at Champlain] that had 15 to 20 beds that I found when it was rough and the waves were crashing in there that I could see moderately well,” Dobson recalls. “And then we used the Flogger to gauge them.” Around 1948, Auguste and his son turned their attention from the air to the ocean, and began applying buoyancy techniques Auguste used on balloons to develop a vessel with which to explore the deep sea.
