About this deal

But Kinks, no matter where they are or what they're doing, are well worth your attention. Whether or not you enjoy them is surely a matter of taste. But if, like many, you've overlooked them, you're missing one of the finest groups we have. Sunny Afternoon’ deserves a special mention as it shows what The Kinks did best. It’s the play-off between softer verses and harder choruses, the balance between retrospection and contemporary British issues (“The taxman’s taken all my dough”), and the general air of genuineness and relatability that made it a deserving #1 and one of The Kinks’ best and most defining songs. On 3 June 1966, Quaife was seriously injured in a car crash. [37] In Ray's 1994 autobiography, he wrote that while Quaife recuperated from his injuries, the band hired an unidentified session bassist for a marathon session on 6 June 1966. Ray identified six songs recorded during the session: "Rosy Won't You Please Come Home", "Too Much On My Mind", "Session Man", "Rainy Day In June", "You're Looking Fine" and the unreleased "Fallen Idol". [37] [38] Quaife later disputed Ray's account, contending that the six songs were recorded before his crash and that the bass guitar heard closely resembles his playing style. [39] Talmy later said he did not recall hiring a session bassist for a marathon session, adding that the playing style does not resemble that of Herbie Flowers, whom Talmy typically called for session work. [37] Hinman concludes: "No definitive resolution to the confusion is available." [39] According to Hinman, bassist John Dalton's only confirmed contribution to the album is on "Little Miss Queen of Darkness", recorded 21 June 1966. [39] Thompson, Gordon (2008). The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (Liner notes). The Kinks. Essential. ESM CD 481. Ah, what is so rare as a Kink in tune? You might well arsk. Don't take your eye off the madness, however, to worry such things: Kinks aren't really concerned with tunes. When Ray sings 'Dandy', for instance, it is reportedly the same silly little piece he wrote for Peter Noone. But in point of fact, Ray's 'Dandy' has little to do with Herman's Herman who merely sang the song.

The Kinks’ early recordings were made for play on AM radio by the great early-60s producer Shel Talmy, so they are inherently a bit thin sounding to begin with… One listens to early Kinks records primarily for the songs’ greatness, not as audiophile benchmarks. ISBN 0-7893-1371-5.Sometimes Face to Face is simply observational, switching between cheeky barbs or impressionable nods at the people of interest, as Davies does so well in the spritely duality of the brilliant Dandy, perhaps the most signature Kinks song here. For women though, Davies is less critical of the individuals and more empathetic towards their circumstances, especially on Little Miss Queen of Darkness and the solemn but warmly affecting ode to Rosy (Arthur’s wife!) on Rosy, Won’t You Please Come Home? The Kinks are starting to build of fascinating world of characters to tell stories about, and they are ever so good at it. The Kinks – Dandy" (in German). Ö3 Austria Top 40. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. [28] Unreleased songs [ edit ]I would like to say that Face to Faceis a tremendously funny lp. I'm uncomfortably aware, however, that there are those, even those I respect muchly and love warmly, who do not find B.C. at all funny. I hesitate, therefore, to urge upon them an album that starts with four rings of a telephone and a pristine male voice saying "Hello, who is that speaking please", followed inexorably by a lead guitar and bass who sound like they've been perched for hours just waiting to play their little run and get into the song (a righteous complaint against whatever it is that interrupts phone conversations). The humor of the thing is indescribable: it's all in the timing, and I break down every time I hear it. But there are those who sit unmoved. It must have something to do with taste.
