About this deal

When you take one of these actions, you choose a Guest card in play (in your hand or in the inn, as appropriate).

Place the traveler in an open (i.e. has a Key token), unoccupied (i.e. has no traveler) room of his choice. Phase 3: End of Round – If there are any corpses in play and police still in the inn, each player must pay the grave-digger 10 francs to dispose of their corpses. The game play itself, while fun, can also feel a bit restrictive at times, especially with some of the less exciting rounds you will be forced to take. The Bloody Inn offers to let you play a short game or a long game and I almost wish there was something in the middle. The short game definitely feels too short, I’d only recommend that for a learning game. However, the long game starts to drag near the end of its play, especially if a player is clearly in the lead. I think something in between would definitely hit the sweet spot for play time. Another thing to be aware of, is the presence of Peasants. They are a special type of guest, limited in number (players start with 2 each) and when you play them from your hand as accomplices, to perform actions, they return to the 'bistro' pile rather than the exit pile. When you take a bribe action, you can choose to take 1 or 2 Peasants into your hand from the bistro rather than bribing a normal guest. The game is divided into two seasons, each of which has a variable number of rounds. Each round has three parts:

Phase 3: End of Round (Morning)

The main thing that drew me to The Bloody Inn, other than the unique theme, was the outstanding artwork. The dark and creative style really drew me in and felt like it fit the theme of the game perfectly. Each card is colorfully illustrated with a picture of the guest, and also contains any relevant game information.

To profit from murder, you must first dispose of the body. You can bury corpses under any of the inn's annexes. Players control the annexes they build. If you use one belonging to another player you'll have to split the profits with them. It's better to deal with the richest guests in areas you control. But you can always undermine your opponents by stuffing their constructions full of low value victims! The Bloody Inn is one of my favourite games to look at, it has such a unique style. It obviously has a grim, dark theme that could put some people off, so therefore it may have been tempting to go with more lighthearted or comical artwork in a bid to make the game less grotesque. But I love how the illustrations give it an almost cinematic quality. The different characters that enter the inn just ooze character and look as though any of them could, quite rightly, be involved in shady dealings. And that’s before you add the expansion ‘Carnies’ which for me was a must-buy because I was so eager to add even more colourful characters to the massacre. What better way to incentivise staff than a bit of friendly competition? In this family business, whoever adds the most to The Bloody Inn‘s coffers will reap the rewards. Each player manages different rooms, although players can kill and bribe a guest in any room. Any guests not pushing up daisies by the end of their stay pay their bill to the player controlling their room.

The Bloody Inn does a lot of things right, from its fantastic artwork down to its solid mechanics. I could see the macabre theme being a turn off for some, but to be honest, there is nothing gruesome about artwork that should turn anyone off. So I think only the most sensitive of players need to worry about the theme here. If you find the murder hotel theme attractive, and enjoy the points shuffle of paying for cards with cards, The Bloody Inn is a fine and light addition to your after dinner games pilePlace the Guest card in front of you on the table, with its Dead Guest side visible; this now becomes a corpse. There is no limit to the number of corpses you can have in front of you, but watch out for the police! Even still, I found The Bloody Inn to be an enjoyable game that has already made its way to our tables a few times. If you are a fan of engine building or hand management games, I can easily recommend this one. It feels fresh and I don’t have much else in my game library like it. Note: Your accomplice has allowed you to build this annex, but you won't be able to count on his abilities thereafter, because he is too busy!

When you kill a Guest of the inn, you put him in front of you Dead-side-up. It pains you, but what can you do? This is the life you have chosen! Keep in mind that you have a code of honor: You only steal money from a Guest when you bury him! An annex can only hold a number of corpses equal to its Rank number. So in the image above, the annex of the Distiller card already has one corpse buried under it. Fortunately as it is a Rank 2 card, it can hold one more corpse. We could alternatively bury the corpse under our Viscount annex as it has space for one corpse. One final thing to note. There is a fifth action that the rulebook states you can leave out when you are new to the game and I definitely agree. It is to ‘Launder money’ and basically means you have to spend precious actions every now and then to manage your money or you risk losing some when you reach a certain amount. Feel free to include it in your games when you feel ready. Hotshot or Grave Mistake? Select the Traveler you want to kill from the inn (in a room of your choice or in the bistro; it's possible to kill the Peasants). For the most part, I did really enjoy The Bloody Inn. It’s a hand management and engine building game with some really solid mechanics. It’s also one of those games where you almost always feel like you don’t have enough actions.
