Description

These are minor caveats, however, as the overall presentation is otherwise terrific, appearing stable, clean, and organic throughout.

This time it's the Golden Harvest film Dragons Forever, originally released in February of 1988 and directed by Sammo Hung and Corey Yuen. I reviewed the UK blu-ray that 88 Films had released a few years back and this 4K blu-ray is better in every way. Chow does eventually show up, after the fight they filmed, to discuss how he got started in the industry, his relationship with Benny The Jet, how he eventually began to work with the likes of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung and his work on Dragons Forever.Working with the Dragons: Interview with Jude Poyer (6:15) – the stuntman/performer Poyer discusses having worked with Sammo Hung and what makes – in his eyes and experience – him such a great director (action director or otherwise), having worked with Hung on Knock-Off and The Medallion.

Another word that is bounded around too often as well with transfers is “Perfect”, but this is the rare case where Perfect is applicable. Universe Laser’s NTSC non-anamorphic HK DVD could be easily imported and there was a 2-disc special edition PAL DVD from Hong Kong Legends in the UK, but, until pretty recently, it was difficult to easily find the film in North America. But I am really not sure at all which one I should watch for the first time, can anyone who has seen this or who knows about it more than me make a recommendation?Jackie (Chan) is a lady-chasing lawyer who’s recently been hired to defend a chemical factory that’s been polluting the water supply filled with fish owned by Miss Yip (Deannie Yip) who, along with her cousin Wen (Pauline Yeung), has filed a lawsuit. The switch flips about a quarter into the film, as the trio turns against the chemical company once they discover they’re manufacturing narcotics that are poisoning the water. A standard edition 4K Ultra HD will eventually follow suit, since their Blu-ray discs are already in print.

The image is clear and sharp and stable throughout, colours are rich, consistent and natural, and the image is properly filmic and with a light level of film grain.

In Dragons Forever, the trio play three friends – one who is a lawyer, another a gun dealer, and the other a cat burglar undergoing therapy -- who are hired by a chemical company and soon grow conscious of the company’s evil business practices, forcing them to make a difficult decision. Unaware of this at first, Jackie employees his friend Wong (Hung) to spy on and potentially court Miss Yip, hoping that she’ll eventually settle out of court. Sure, they were heavily choreographed, but they were just brutal to the point that Sammo’s characters would kill their opponents more than they would save them (in the final fight at least). Dialogue is clean and nicely balanced with the score and effects, and the low end gets a nice boost in Atmos. Less well-known here in the US was 1988’s Dragons Forever , co-directed by Hung and Corey, and starring Chan, Hung, and Biao.
