About this deal

Dylan, an enigmatic nine-year-old with a gift for asking questions, unexpectedly befriends his grandfather, an ill-mannered eighty-seven-year-old with an extraordinary way of answering them. I liked Rayvan and Ananais but outside of those two I didn't really care about any of the other characters. Jodie Madison can't think of a better place for a fresh start than the exclusive, gated community of The Grove. It seems that Gemmell must have been writing to a word limit, and he realized he was getting close to it and thus finished the book as quickly as possible.

If you loved Legend, chances are huge that you will love the King Beyond the Gate for it does follow the same pattern. Granddad is a grumpy one and Dylan is a curious boy with never ending line of questions and cute inner dialogue. The King Beyond the Gate is the second fantasy novel by Gemmell in his Drenai series, originally published in 1985 (a year after my birth, if that).

The same racial tensions exist, and there is a new bad guy to defeat, but this time on the other side of the line.

The plan will explore the issues they are facing and short and long term goals will be set to help build and sustain positive change. None of these things would normally be too big of a deal because it's nearly impossible to match the greatness of those same elements in Legend. Three former protectors of the realm (Tenaka Khan, Decado and Ananais) are reunited in their determination to bring him down, gathering allies as they face overwhelming odds and dark forces. On the one hand, the Author weaves in a few interesting threads, such as the Dragon Legion, which is an elite Drenai unit, or the horrifying Joinings. The dialogue can be stilted and goofy, but occasionally Gemmell will hit upon some interesting insight in the characters' differing philosophy.

Ananais, a golden warrior who, along with the terrible wound he receives in battle, loses faith in himself? In the Legend we have the Earl of Bronze or Druss - men who seemed larger than life itself, who inspired to fight, encouraged, and attracted others. The Reception classes and Dragonflies are also given opportunities throughout the year for sessions.David Gemmell is one of those beloved authors whose name has been written in stone as a fantasy author that has to be on a serious fantasy fans shelf. He was very much still finding his footing as a professional author with this one coming off of a surprise success, and I don't think there's much about it that's going to be memorable and stick with me. Attentive readers of the awesome Legend, which dealt with the First Nadir War, are obviously gonna be confused by Gemmell's almost-immediate mention of the Second Nadir War in between the first and second books. I saw her wrestling, as it seemed, with an oafish looking young man in the dance, and so I went up and issued the required “Excuse me” words.

I really don't mean any of this to sound like any kind of backhanded compliment--there are dense and complex fantasies high and low and then there are just faith-in-humanity reaffirming stories of dudes (and Gemmell does of course have his share of powerful, effective, dangerous and heroic women. I mean, you're not gonna find a startlingly realistic and deep human being in these pages but the man did come up with Druss the fucking Legend, so you have to give him some credit. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. The Mighty Bard are a British prog-rock band and new album ‘Beyond the Gate’ promises “a collection of songs that encapsulate the mystery and wonder of the mystical world”… expect to get lost in the myst, then. But it's true in the same way that the Original Series of Star Trek has to be on a Trekkie's shelf, even though it isn't the best TV ever made.
