While I love the artwork in Raina’s graphic novels this is the first of her Smile series that I’ve actually finished reading. Raina just wanted to be a normal girl, but one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls severely injuring her two front teeth.

This anxiety blights her school days (she freezes during a class presentation with her best friend and lashes out at a bullying schoolmate) and extends into fears about sickness and schoolwork, and frustrations with her raucous household. Absolutely amazing and brave of Raina to share her story to help others who might be going through the same thing. Though it is intended to connect to others who have similar problems, this book made me uncomfortable and a little anxious throughout, since for many early years of my life I had stomach issues related in part to anxiety, partly genetic.
