In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, I asked a very experienced outdoorsman what he thought of those liners. I've used them on long fell walks in very wet conditions, and across the Pennine moors (pretty good test conditions). Manitobah mukluks have a fairly tapered toe box when brand new, but there is a lot of vertical space and the leather stretches out a lot as you wear them. OTOH I have used my last pair of quality full leather boots for 10 years and north of 1500km of hiking, at least half of it in difficult terrain and with a heavy (15kg+ load). On the other hand a good leather boot can last for years and will stay as waterproof as they day you got it with a bit of care.

They are very cozy warm with a wide toe box and slim heel (which means they don’t slide around my narrow heels).In a previous post ( The Trouble With My Boots) I explained my reticence at spending a fortune on waterproof motorcycle boots that may or may not be waterproof. it was more the BOOTS per se that I'm wanting to try out… And so far, apart from liner issues, I have to say I'm loving them!

I haven't experienced failure of the membrane in any offshore I've owned, including one on which I wore out the soles. for the great majority of users, Gore-Tex boot liners fail anyway, and sooner rather than later if any real mileage is being covered. But you can use waterproofing treatment on non-leather shoes, both sprays and waxes can be used on them!

Unfortunately, any waterproofing wax has also problems to stay inside the leather in those very spots. And it is with good reason: the spectacular trail winds along the edge of the coast, offering plenty of opportunities for swimming. I slipped them on over my socks then slipped my feet into my regular and not at all waterproof bike boots.

Keep them clean (like properly clean, use a footwear cleaner), and treat them with something to improve the DWR, and the water won't soak in as quickly. I have a pair of Goretex lined shoes on as I type, by the end of the day my feet will be hot sweaty and smelly. The Tracker Snow is the best option for winter, but we’ve had a great experience using the Tracker FG as well. The Mukishoes Igneous is a soft boot that looks stylish and on trend while still being delightfully light and flexible. It has got to the point now where there isn't enough choice in the market as people expect to see GTX in everything. They claim to be Goretex, I have no real understanding of what Goretex looks or feels like and I am assuming the Goretex is within the layers of the material.
