I think, though, that for a long-term trip around South America, the Osprey Farpoint 55L is a very good size, as I need clothes and gear for a range of different climates.

However, unlike a suitcase, the Farpoint has carry options that make it easy to lug around all day without getting too uncomfortable, which isn’t true for many suitcases. The Farpoint 55 itself is 3 cm deeper than Ryanair allows but I am pretty positive and relaxed that I will have no problems since there still are the compressions straps. Osprey’s lightest travel pack, the Farpoint can be carried like a backpack but packed like a suitcase.
