An AMRC engineer features in a new book that will be sent to every secondary school in the UK to inspire and excite young people about careers in engineering. Each profile will focus on how the individual got into engineering, and what really inspires them about both their career and their day-to-day work. And the projects displayed in the book are diverse and intriguing: for instance, developing fabric from excess carbon dioxide, building flood alleviation schemes, 3D printing prosthetic limbs and converting waste chicken feathers into packaging. Dr Shini Somara said: “Engineers are problem-solvers and I’m keen to highlight how much their ingenuity, creativity and logic impacts us all.She has worked together with brands such as Williams Racing, Google, Dyson and National Grid, The Institute of Engineering and Technology and The Royal Academy of Engineering.

The book is intended to show young people that engineering is an industry for everyone, profiling engineers from a range of backgrounds, disciplines and industries. Here you can find resources that will help you to use the content of the book in your classroom lessons.

The institute's new home houses 400 scientists working across themes including: genes and the environment; heart and metabolic disease; and sex-based differences in disease. I believe that engineers are undercover superheroes, who save lives in many different ways, by building safe bridges, planes, medical equipment and much more.

It can be handed to a young person to show the variety of engineering careers out there in an engaging way, to teachers and careers advisers guiding students, or to anyone who is involved in engineering outreach activities.Krystina Pearson-Rampeearee, an Aerospace Engineer, is just one of forty-six engineers featured in this engaging book.
