Description

A compound gin is the more modern and safe version of bathtub gin that also involves infusing berry and fruit essences in neutral grain spirits. Bathtub Gin has moved from being a single product to being part of The Ableforth Series (formerly The Professor Ampleforth series), which also contains an Old Tom Gin, a Sloe Gin, a Summer Fruit Cup, a Cask Aged version of Bathtub Gin and a Navy Strength Gin (as well as a few spirits outside of the Gin category). Yes, they have been busy!

Just like the many varieties of wine, gin boasts an impressive list of different styles with distinct classification requirements, ingredients and flavor profiles. One stand-out style next to the popular London dry and barrel-aged gins is the amusingly named category of Old Tom gin. But just what is Old Tom gin — and what is its story? What is Old Tom Gin? The thing with Bathtub Gin is that you make it exclusively by adding botanicals AFTER distillation to a cheap. Producers add them to a cheap grain of alcohol and let them infuse for a while. Winner of the Great British Food Awards 2020 and Gold in the World Gin Awards 2020 and the Gin Masters.Prior to that lunch, we’d pretty much just been focusing on brandies and eau de vies,” Seestedt said. “I’d been thinking about trying my hand at a gin for while, and that was when David suggested an Old Tom.”

This product is wrapped in brown paper and solely named after the category. The spirit is produced by Ableforth Spirits, who did a beautiful job with this compound gin. Tasting notes It was called bathtub gin because the bottles they were using were too large to fit in the kitchen sink. And so, they would place the containers in the bathtub and fill them up with tap water. They added water to the mix to cut the cheap, low-quality alcohol, which had an unpleasant taste and was high percentage ABV. Add the juniper berries, caraway seeds, star anise, and all the fruit peels with the vodka in the jar. Swirl around to mix, then cover the jar with the lid. Step 4This type of bathtub gin offers a citrusy-fruity blend that uses juniper berries and fruit peels from fragrant citrus fruits like lemon, orange, and grapefruit. Ingredients: Genever is a Dutch spirit usually made from a malt spirit base (like whiskey!), flavored with juniper and a variety of additional botanicals (like gin!). As it became wildly popular in England during the Anglo-Dutch wars of the 1660s, fans of the stuff eventually attempted to recreate it for themselves. This is how Old Tom and London dry styles of gin came to be. Both styles are understood to have emerged around the 18th century. Where Does the Name “Old Tom” Come From? Sterilize the glass jar by washing it in hot and soapy water. Wipe dry and let air dry as well. Step 2 An easy way to avoid cheaply produced Gins is by looking at the label. If it says something like Distilled Gin, Dry Gin, or London Dry Gin, it cannot be a Compound Gin. Bathtub Gin– owing to the fact that legally gin is simply “juniper flavored spirit,” one can make a gin by infusing/macerating, or alternatively “cold compounding” juniper berries and other botanicals in a spirit.

To keep things covert, pubs would provide gin through metal tubing that ran to the outside of the building. These gin tubes could be found by looking out for cat-shaped plaques mounted on the exterior of the pubs. Individuals would then be served a measure of gin through the tube by putting money in a slot under the cat’s paw. Most brands producing compound gin do not hide their production method. So by looking at the label, you will find the desired information 99% of the time. Also, because not all Bathtub Gin is of low quality, a few brands aim to give this type a better image: Best Bathtub Gins tracicle Bathtub Gin Bottle is much smaller than in shops currently, so lead to believe it is on offer. bottle is gorgeous but price is not comparable Many of the cheapest supermarket home brands used to employ cold compounding when producing gin on a commercial scale. Using artificial flavourings resulted in much cheaper production costs, thus larger profit margins. Because of this it has long been seen as an inferior method of creating gin. By and large we agree that over long periods of time cold compound gins could dispel their flavour, and that for the most those that have historically used cold compounding were solely doing so because it’s cheap and not because they wanted to create great tasting gin. Moreover, they used artificial flavourings and extracts rather than actual botanicals…Being alcohol-based which makes for an excellent natural preservative, bathtub gin, if stored away from the sun unopened, would likely last for years. You can even be aged in casks for a smoother, rich, and more mellow body.

But that being said, Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Bathtub Old Tom Gin feels a bit disjointed, the sweetening aside from the botanicals, the botanicals not really tightly wound or integrated. It has some good moments, but the finish seems a little off. It certainly makes a good Martinez and I would wholeheartedly endorse it as a good mixing gin. But I’m not sure that the bathtub technique or botanical selection seems to lend itself to the Old Tom style in this instance. Overall Original Bathtub Gin, compound, and cold compounded gin all mean the same: A gin flavored with botanicals macerated in a neutral grain spirit or by adding essences and extracts. During prohibition, many people tried to supply others with homemade liquor. People had no access to distilleries and had to produce their alcohol or moonshine at home secretly. Old Tom gin is often considered a bridge between gin’s original form, genever, and the London dry styles we know and love today. This is believed for two reasons: Old Tom appeared chronologically after genever did, and Old Tom gin is drier than genever but sweeter than London dry.Concurrently, Hayman Distillers in the UK dusted off a family recipe for Old Tom Gin hailing from 1870. Hayman’s hit the market in 2007. Ransom hit the market late 2008. And the definition of Old Tom Gin became even more vague. Justthetonic Bathtub gin I am trying lots of gins at the minute. I think I chose this one fir the cute bottle. Unfortunately this is nit to my taste and I don’t like this gin at all. If Genever is the heady forefather of modern gin and London Dry is the modern standard bearer, Old Tom is the neglected middle child. Not as malty and heavy-handed as Genever. Not as spicy and arid as London Dry. Often sweeter and rounder than your more modern gins, Old Tom gin offers a great introduction to a somewhat divisive spirit. There are two types of bathtub gin, the historical kind which is how the name originated, and the contemporary take on this drink. Bathtub gin refers to an alcohol-based drink mixture produced at home or anywhere using non-professional methods. The name was invented in the 1920s during the alcohol prohibition. Bathtub gin was considered bootleg and was poor in quality, but it remained popular due to its availability.
