So, are the G1 and its OLED Evo panel genuinely better than LG’s previous OLEDs? The answer is a resounding yes. While not every aspect of the LG G1’s picture performance excels, there are aspects of it that take OLED displays to impressive places. It’s the best image quality I’ve reviewed on any LG OLED, and right up there with some of the best-looking images I’ve seen on any TV. Sound quality If there’s one aspect where the G1 OLED gives something away, is that sense of punchiness QLEDs can deliver. In broad terms, wireless connectivity is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. More specifically, the LG G1 supports AirPlay 2, built-in Chromecast, WiSA (Wireless Speaker & Audio) and Bluetooth Surround Ready. The AI Sound Pro mode follows the lead of the AI Picture Pro mode by seeking to optimise incoming audio of all types to the capabilities of the TV’s speaker system – and it mostly works very well. It instantly increases the sound’s dynamic range; makes the sound project further away from the TV’s bodywork; gives the sound a stronger ‘forward’ presence rather than it appearing to only exist behind the screen; and takes on those big movie moments with plenty of guts and enthusiasm.

Next, we measure for luminance and colour changes at 10-degree horizontal intervals up to 55 degrees, and 10-degree vertical intervals up to 30 degrees. While it makes sense these days to shift the webOS focus to providing recommended content curated from across supported apps rather than making users explore content on a per-app basis, the layout and 'weighting' of the new home screen doesn't feel quite right. The three link options along the top of the screen in particular feel like they're been given more weight than they really warrant. Dolby Vision is coming to Xbox Series X and S video gaming later this year too, bolstering LG OLED’s already pretty legendary reputation with high-end gamers.

Cinematic Movement seems best suited for films, Natural for broadcast TV, and Smooth Movement for sports. There’s no one-size fits all, so the G1’s motion processing is solid rather than impressive, and for my two cents, still behind the likes of Panasonic and Sony (although I’ve not seen their latest TVs, yet). Burn-in and image retention are issues prospective buyers ought to be aware of with OLEDs. Image retention is temporary, but burn-in can be more permanent. Both are only a factor if the TV is driven hard over a prolonged period. FMM also supports auto-detection over HDMI or from a streaming app, so when it receives a FMM signal it will automatically pivot to the picture mode. As far as I can tell, there’s no content with the Filmmaker mode signal out there.

LG G1 OLED Review (OLED55G1PUA, OLED65G1PUA, OLED77G1PUA)

We leave the set’s AI Picture Pro and AI Sound Pro settings (which can be enabled during initial set-up) on when viewing all non-Dolby Vision content. These features have been improved by the new AI Processor Gen4. LG has also improved its already strong input lag appeal to gamers by getting input lag down to 12.4 and 9.4ms, depending on whether you’re using the Standard or new Boost input lag reduction options (the latter of which apparently aligns the lag-reducing mode with a game’s refresh rate). The luminance changes up between 35 and 55 degrees are quite dramatic, and that's certainly why the full five stars was out of its reach, but it keeps colours consistent. Though more work is clearly needed, we rather like the new home menu overall and miss the pop-up row of apps less than expected. LG should also be applauded for finally overhauling its settings menus. The rather ugly and convoluted menus of before have been replaced by a system with larger fonts, a less severe white-on-grey colour scheme and a far more logical layout, all without sacrificing opportunities for tweaking performance. With broadcasts, AI Sound Pro can grate on the ears, and I’d absolutely recommend going through the acoustic tuning process to optimise this mode. Without it, watching Best Home Cook on BBC 2 delivered dialogue that was frequently sibilant and harsh, as if someone were whistling every few words. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for two months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. These differences, along with a slightly richer, more refined HDR-content colour palette, are more consistently noticeable when playing HDR console and PC games than they are with typical video. Contrast is impressively wide-ranging, and colours are dramatically conveyed, especially in Dolby Vision, the presence of which adds a lush, rich tone. It’s a close tussle between this and the Philips OLED+935 when it comes to their respective Dolby Vision performances, but I’d say the LG just edges it with its more natural look.
