Description

There are few transport routes leading north to south and so no easy way for Russia to project power southward into modern Mongolia or China: it lacks the manpower and supply lines to do so. This is free download Shadowplay: Behind the Lines and Under Fire: The Inside Story of Europe’s Last War by Tim Marshall complete book soft copy. It is also a personal account, which makes the structure somewhat messy, but also results in a very readable book, as Marshall shares interesting tidbits and insights from his sources. It doesn’t give much context to the Balkan wars of the early 90s but that’s not Tim’s fault, it’s mine for being a philistine. It has already helped to develop the Kenyan port of Mombasa and is now embarking on more huge projects just as Kenya’s oil assets are beginning to become commercially viable.

Tim Marshall počas konfliktu v Juhoslávii pôsobil v tejto oblasti ako korešpondent pre britskú televíziu Sky News. This book is a memoir of the author’s experience as a journalist in the Kosovo war, but it also tries to be a lot more and fails pretty badly.

He highlights that with sky satellites maintaining the world’s economy; space metals being worth more than most countries’ GDP; and people expected on Mars in the next decade, space will increasingly dominate military thinking.

Kosovo doesn’t seem to have received the attention it is due, so I’m glad when a book published in 2019 is focused on it. Twenty years on from the war's end, with the rise of Russian power, a weakened NATO and stalled EU expansion, this story is more relevant than ever, as questions remain about the possibility of conflict on European soil. When we are reaching for the stars, the challenges ahead are such that we will perhaps have to come together to meet them: to travel the universe not as Russians, Americans, or Chinese but as representatives of humanity. Marshall has quite a pleasant writing style but the beginning is too fast-paced for someone without much knowledge of the conflict, hence not giving this book a 5* rating.Marshall began his journalistic career reporting for LBC and was their Paris Bureau Correspondent for three years.
