Still, if you’re new to one or more aspects of music production, it’s worth exploring who these devices are — and aren’t — for. The Akai MPK Mini mk3is USB hub powered. It connects and powers by a standard USB-A to USB-B cable and does not require an additional power supply. The MPK Mini Play MkIII is a lively looking mini keyboard with most of the features of the MPK Mini MkIII. It sacrifices a few knobs to benefit from a bank of 128 internal sounds, 10 drum kits, and a speaker. It can be battery powered to sit it on your knee and enjoy playing the sounds on the bus, in the park or wherever you may be without any other gear. You also get eight Q-link knobs on this device, and these also come with two banks, giving you up to 16 knob assignments. Assign any function that has a scalar or percentage sort of application, like reverb, delay, or other fx.

Additionally, the mk3's keybed is a reimagined Gen 2 enhanced dynamic keybed, delivering a piano key performance fit for the world's finest keyboard players. If you have no need for the onboard sounds, definitely go for the regular MPK mini as it has better knobs (infinite vs. the 270° ones this has because of the features) and no real estate is lost to the speaker - plus you get other colors! I wish these were available in the different colors the regular MPK mini - I really don't like the color of this thing and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna paint the plastic case.

There’s no onboard audio or audio out here, meaning that neither model is capable of being a standalone performance device. But, really, if you’re looking for that kind of device, you’re not going to be happy with the limited two-octave span in the first place. For the MK3, Akai has added a “Gen 2 Enhanced Dynamic Keybed.” One of the criticisms of the MK2 was that the keys felt cheap and flimsy, so it seems the company is seeking to improve in this area. The keys are still smallish, but they feel more responsive than the MK2’s keys do.

Classical musicians or music teachers might want to keep a device like this one handy, as well. It’s quite useful for basic MIDI input in an instructional setting, as well as basic typesetting in notation programs like Finale, Sibelius or Dorico. Why is this good, you ask? It allows for more freedom of expression when recording automation or performing live by giving you effectively zero physical limitations on movement. The MPK mini mk3does not have a low power mode to operate with an iOS device, though many users have reported success using a powered USB hub to interface the MPK with their phone or tablet. If you’re an advanced keyboard player who wants to do virtuosic live or studio work, using two hands at the keyboard and spanning a significant distance, this isn’t the device for you. The two-octave range just isn’t built for that kind of use. You might still find value in having a “one-hand” portable keyboard for MIDI production or even notation work, but it can’t be your main performance instrument. The MPK mini Play comes bundled with MPC Beats, the powerful music-making and recording desktop software DAW for Mac and PC, based on the iconic MPC hardware. This DAW features a full array of musical instrument don’t have to worry about power adapters, chargers, or cables when it’s time to play music. The upgraded built-in speaker delivers increased output and added low-end response, making for more enjoyable playing and jamming. With an Akai market the pads as “pulled right from our flagship MPC”. The actual pad rubbers do appear to be the same as those on the MPC One, but the mechanism does not feel the same, having a shallower, tappy action. They certainly do the job, though. I believe it does. There are a couple of really neat things with the MK3 and I believe it might be the most intuitive mini option currently available. Pros When you look from left to right, you are met with a pitch-bend strip and a modulation strip. I will get into this in more detail a little further into the review.

The eight knobs are still here, but now they rotate 360 degrees, giving you enhanced control of some functions. They also have built-in presets if you use the MPC software. OLED Display Similarly to the keybed, the drum pads on the MPK Mini Mk3 were also revamped. This one’s debatable though. I’ve heard some people comment that they preferred the older model’s “squishier” nature. Personally, though, I find the newer, firmer ones to be more responsive and tactile than ever before. In any case, they are up there with the standards of today’s generation of MPCs. The Laucnhkey MK3 is probably the best controller for Ableton Live. The reason I say this is the fact that it has been carefully designed to work flawlessly and intuitively with Ableton Live. Preset 1 on the MPK mini mk3 is configured to align with MPC Beats. To load the MPC preset, press and hold down the Prog Select Button and press Pad 1. Now, your MPK's pads will line up perfectly with MPC Beats! Recently, Akai Professional has released an update to the MPK Mini, the MPK Mini MK3. The company had unprecedented success with the MK2, so it makes sense that the newer model looks and feels very similar. Still, there are some notable upgrades that make the MKIII worth considering if you’re in the market for a new mini controller.
