Meanwhile, after finding Varinia and Spartacus's newborn son, Crassus takes them prisoner. He is disturbed by the idea that Spartacus can command more love and loyalty than he can, and hopes to compensate by making Varinia as devoted to him as she was to her former husband. When she rejects him, he furiously seeks out Spartacus (whom he recognizes from having watched him at Batiatus' school) and forces him to fight Antoninus to the death. The survivor is to be crucified, along with all the other slaves. Spartacus kills Antoninus to spare him this terrible fate. The incident leaves Crassus worried about Spartacus's potential to live in legend as a martyr. In other matters, he is also worried about Caesar, who he senses will someday eclipse him.

Toussaint Louverture was no gladiator. He grew up to work as a coachman. Although born a slave, he was given his freedom in his thirties and then became a minor slave-owner himself. Educated by the Jesuits, he was fully literate and spoke the local kreyòl dialect as well as French. Apart from this, very little is known for certain about Toussaint’s life before the 1790s; nor is it clear whether he played any part in the initial slave rebellion when it broke out in August 1791. Much of Sudhir Hazareesingh’s treatment of these early years is made up of speculation about what Toussaint might have done or could be imagined doing or thinking. Hazareesingh is a fervent admirer and there is more than a touch of hagiography in this eminently scholarly biography. His fairly consistent assumption throughout is that his hero had always been the admirable model of revolutionary rectitude that the more solid documentary evidence of his later activities gives us. Toussaint was certainly a man of presence and organisational ability, but the available sources suggest that he only emerged clearly as a leader in 1793, when what had formerly been the richest colony in the world had already experienced several years of increasing chaos.

The film was re-released in 1967, without 23 minutes that had been in the original release. For the 1991 release, the same 23 minutes were restored by Robert A. It would be interesting to see the Wolfson judges explain why they think Hazareesingh significantly advances the subject; but do not expect it, for there is no such advance. A phenomenally researched book, the wealth and granularity of historical detail about Toussaint Louverture and Haitian Revolution (Saint Domingue then) in the 1790s is incredible, as is its assessment of Toussaint's legacy and influence on radical anti-slavery movements throughout the 19th and 20th century. The 2015 restoration had originally been scheduled to have its theatrical premiere in March 2015 at the TCM Classic Film Festival, [61] but was pulled from the festival, [62] and from a July 2015 engagement in Chicago, because the restoration had not been completed in time. [64] [65] Reception [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] I as completely enthralled by this biography, I knew very little going in about Toussaint, but by the end , this book made me feel really knowledgeable, it also goes into great depth without losing any of your interest. The author has the skill to be detailed, but keep you interested even though it is largely academic. I found the inclusion of newspaper clippings, artist impressions and posters etc to be really useful, after all we are all visual beings, even avid readers and I feel it adds to the history. Sudhir is succinct, to the point and writes in plain English, clear and understandable, a completely accessible style. A great book to learn about a great man whose influence was and is felt long after his death. Plamen Pavlov, Stanimir Dimitrov, Spartak– sinyt na drenva Trakija/ Spartacus– the Son of ancient Thrace. [59] [60] Based on the events in late 73 BC and early 72 BC, which suggest independently operating groups of escaped slaves [52] and a statement by Plutarch, it appears that some of the escaped slaves preferred to plunder Italy, rather than escape over the Alps. We would love you to join them... Having read several works on Toussaint L'Ouverture and the Haitian Revolution, it is interesting that I found that each provides a slightly different perspective and in some cases, uncovers new information about the man and the events he was so much a part of. That is true of this book by Suhir Hazareesingh, which not only covers the significant events of the revolution but looks at L'Ouverture, the man. Despite persistent reports that Britain would seek to gain the colony and appeals for intervention by white colonists, the British government adopted a very cautious response. The Foreign Secretary, William, Lord Grenville, observed that there was no intention of retaliating in the West Indies for French intervention in the War of American Independence, “and that we are fully persuaded that all the islands in the West Indies are not worth to us one year of that invaluable tranquillity which we are now enjoying.” The 'Spartacus' duel: UA, Yul Brynner and the rival 'Gladiators', Variety retrospective, August 13, 2012, retrieved January 21, 2016 The story is astonishing – but also astonishingly difficult to write about. Sources for Toussaint’s life before the rebellion are scant and scattered. Historians only discovered in the 1970s that he had gained his freedom in the 1770s and had himself briefly owned at least one slave. Much more documentary information about him survives, but it is dispersed among dozens of archives in several countries. Haitian historians have never had the resources to compile, let alone edit and publish it in the way that American historians have done for their “founding fathers”. Only in the past quarter-century, thanks to the academy’s turns towards “global” and “subaltern” histories, has the Haitian revolution attracted sustained scholarly attention in North America and Europe.

He says, "I've seen that movie half a dozen times, and I still don't know who the real Spartacus is" which he says is what makes the film a "classic whodunit."
