Plenty of breathless one-more-chapter, stay-up-late suspense wrapped around a meaty and timely story ... irresistible. Lee Child Matthew Quirk moves into David Baldacci and John Grisham territory with The Night Agent, a paranoid, pulse-pounding thriller that could not be more prescient. If you’re wondering where the best of the next generation of suspense talent is headed, look no further.”— Joseph Finder The action dazzles. The characters feel authentic and fully fleshed. The threats seem all too real. Los Angeles Review of Books on Cold Barrel Zero Russian interference, political conspiracies, and edge-of-your-seat suspense drive Matthew Quirk’s nonstop thriller, “The Night Agent.”

Retrieved December 3, 2021. Then there were the practical things: “We looked into subways and how near they can get to gas lines, and explosions that could cause bigger explosions. I’m surprised an FBI agent hasn’t questioned our writer’s assistant on that. We want to tell stories that are thrilling, that are logical. [Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and director] David Mamet, who I worked with for a while on a different TV show, always used to talk about stories being surprising, but inevitable. We tried to find surprising, but inevitable things. We did a lot of research to always try to make sure that what we were talking about felt grounded and real.” The Night Agent is an American action thriller television series created by Shawn Ryan based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk. Starring Gabriel Basso in the title role, it premiered on Netflix on March 23, 2023. [1] The series emerged as the third-most-viewed debuting series on Netflix in its first four days, and within a week it was renewed for a second season. [2] Within a month, it became the streamer's sixth-most-viewed series. The Night Agent is a compelling high-stakes thriller, lightning fast, relentlessly suspenseful and unsettlingly realistic.”— Hank Phillippi Ryan, bestselling author of Trust Me You’ve read the book description, so you know the plot setup. Matthew Quirk doesn’t spend a whole ton of time setting the scene, and once that’s finished, it’s just bang-bang action, chases, and tension in a mad dash to the finish. Inevitably, the suspicions also fell on Peter, despite his efforts to play everything straight and do everything by the rules. He has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a surveillance specialist even knowing his chances of advancement are slim. However, all his hard work finally paid off the day Peter was offered a job in the Situation Room by the White House chief of staff. His role: to be the agent manning the night desk, monitoring any calls that might come in through the emergency phone lines during the graveyard shift. Even though none ever come, it’s still an important job, and Peter is also thankful enough just to have a position in the heart of the capital. Full disclaimer, I read this after binge watching the entirety of the show on Netflix and then watching it again because I liked it so much. Then I decided I wanted to read the source material. Strap in for one hell of a ride. The Night Agent is full of twists and surprises you’ll never see coming. Ben Coes

Ryan wanted the thriller to feel compelling and plausible, but when you’re researching a show about a plot against the United States, you end up Googling some pretty touchy subjects. “One of the lessons I’ve learned as a showrunner is always have the assistant Google the things that the federal government is going to investigate you for. I keep my hands clean in terms of that,” Ryan jokes. “But you want to Google exact floor plans of the White House, which could raise some red flags. ‘Why are these people so interested in the bottom floors of the White House? What's going on?’ We have a storyline involving this character, Omar Zadar [played by Adam Tsekhman], from an unnamed country, running for office in this country. We did a lot of research into political turmoil in different nations around the world so that we might have a good grasp of how that character might be perceived by some as a freedom fighter and by others as a terrorist.” Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who works at the White House as a Night Action telephone operatorSeitz, Loree (April 18, 2023).
