Measurements will need to be taken from the inside walls of the chamber opening, from one side to the other. When you lift your existing cover, if you find your opening / chamber is 380-480mm you are likely to need a 450mm cover. Cast iron manhole covers are classified for higher weight loads because of its tougher substance and higher loading class than galvanised steel counterparts. An F900 class cast iron manhole cover weighs 145 kg and is approved to support up to 90 tonnes of weight. Galvanized steel manhole covers can be used in regions with little or no traffic because it is not suited for use on roads and highways.
