In 1945, the London Power Company commemorated Swan by naming a new 1,554 GRT coastal collier SS Sir Joseph Swan. [28] [46] Personal life [ edit ] Sir Joseph Wilson Swan FRS (31 October 1828– 27 May 1914) was an English physicist, chemist, and inventor. He is known as an independent early developer of a successful incandescent light bulb, and is the person responsible for developing and supplying the first incandescent lights used to illuminate homes and public buildings, including the Savoy Theatre, London, in 1881. Thank you! *** This is a beautiful story about life defined by loss and the sense of a purpose it produces. It is also a story of love for family: the good as well as the misguided, and about the ways we honor those we love through memory and the preservation of their story. The plot is engaging and contains interesting historical facts. The author’s descriptions of Silvy’s and Mari’s observations and feelings about their surroundings are heartfelt and transporting. I loved joining Silvy in his quiet, everyday life, his love for his older brother, his memories, and his courage. I also loved that this novel fed into my fascination for lighthouses.

I loved the thought put into the details- how the dog earned his name, the lighthouse being a character all on its own, the interwoven storylines- everything was just perfect! James Bowman Lindsay demonstrated a constant electric light at a public meeting in Dundee, Scotland. This is story of hope, love and family, a lighthouse and lost treasure. Told in two different timelines, the life of Silvestre Swan light housekeeper of Swan light and present marine archaeologist Mari Adam and her love for uncovering the past.

Swan was apprenticed for six years to a Sunderland firm of pharmacists/ druggists, Hudson and Osbaldiston. [4] However, it is not known whether Swan completed his six-year apprenticeship, as both partners subsequently died. [4] He was said to have had an enquiring mind, [4] even as a child. He augmented his education with a fascination for his surroundings, the industry of the area, and reading at Sunderland Library. [4] He attended lectures at the Sunderland Atheneum. Except the bad guys of course. The story was interesting and the setting engaging. There were some silly things later in the book but by that time I cared about the characters to ignore those flaws. Swan is now in his 80s and trying to save his lighthouse/home from sliding off the bluff into the sea... Ebenezer Kinnersley from Gloucester experimented with electrostatically charged capacitors to heat a wire to incandescence.

Also, I needed more information and description about the interior of the lighthouse to make the story come alive and there was so much character jumping that, at times, it was difficult to know what was going on and where a sudden character introduction took place.
