About this deal

The title of this film is confusing. I first saw it on a Hong Kong Legends DVD as In the Line of Duty. HKL had released the first film in the series, Yes Madam, as Police Assassins, then skipped directly to this fourth entry. To be fair to them, it never made much sense to pretend that they exist as part of a series, despite the onscreen title for this one—Royal Madam IV: The Witness—again combining elements of the titles of the first two films. Royal Warriors or Yes Madam is defined as the "first" film, and whether or not all four are indeed a traditional "series", the first two and where any number of alternate titles can either link or uncouple various entries in the "series" in a virtually random fashion (it's perhaps salient to

As with Part 3, In the Line of Duty IV receives Eureka’s customary solid Blu-ray treatment. The picture is a huge upgrade on the old DVD, the sound is mono but does its job. It’s not the disc you’ll show off your system with, but it’s far and away the best presentation of this film. Yen, young in his career, stages a number of startlingly fast, expertly choreographed fights including a finale rife in production value near an airport. Other than unfortunate, unnecessary slow motion, it’s a near-flawless climax, and joined to two other coinciding battles. In addition, Yen projects a sure-handed coolness, not ego, that elevates his character. Fortune Star used to release some upscaled SD masters on Blu-ray in the early 2010s, although their masters have greatly increased in quality since then. And this new 1080p AVC-encoded presentation is indicative of that growth, thankfully. This is a really nice and clean presentation, with film grain being a bit lighter than anticipated, although the levels change during optical effects and the title sequence. films, Frank Djeng kind of hilariously gets into how this supposed "series" really isn't by any objective standard, and that in fact due to the

equivalent of Police Woman, albeit with a facility for martial arts that Pepper Anderson never had. Eureka Entertainment have over the years have impressed with their vast collection of Martial Arts titles. That trend is about to continue in March with the release of the third and fourth instalments of In The Line Of Duty III and In The Line Of Duty IV.

Donnie Yen does, of course, steal a little focus. Credit to him and Yuen Woo-ping though, they both clearly know this is Khan’s movie, and give her a ton of hero moments. There’s no need to cut around anything for Yen, and that makes his action flow even better. The fight with Salvitti, and finale fights with Wong and Michael Woods (also in the first two Tiger Cage films, which shot either side of this one) stand out, as does what is essentially a jousting match shot on dirt bikes. This Eureka Classics Limited Edition of In the Line of Duty III features a Limited Edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling [First Print Run of 2000 copies] and a Limited Edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing by James Oliver [First Print Run of 2000 copies]. On disc extras include the marvelous two audio commentaries listed below, my preferred one being the one with Mike Leeder and Arne Venema since their conversational banter makes it very listenable as well as informative, but Frank Djeng also brings his usual wealth of knowledge to the table in his solo commentary. Cynthia Khan stars in her first leading role as a young police officer who goes up against a dangerous duo of Japanese terrorists. After staging an outrageous jewellery heist in Tokyo, two thieves (Stuart Ong and Michiko Nishiwaki) travel to Hong Kong to trade their stolen goods. In the fan-favourite fourth entry in the In the Line of Duty film series, action superstar Donnie Yen and Cynthia Khan team up with legendary martial-arts director Yuen Woo-ping.

Now, In the Line of Duty IV, talk about finding your footing again four entries into a loosely connected film series. Yeun Woo-Ping, a hugely talented filmmaker and stunt coordinator, gets the helm in this story of Cynthia Khan in Seattle after some drug smugglers, and this time Donnie Yen is here and plays a hotheaded cop with a sadistic bloodlust. The humor that usually shows up is replaced with adrenaline-fueled action in nearly every other scene, constantly keeping the audience on their toes and not paying attention to the somewhat-thin storyline underneath. And at 95 minutes, it’s all very economical and respectful of the audience’s time. 4/5 In the Line of Duty IV spends minimal time on storyline, retreading the familiar series routine of international police joining on a case, with Khan the righteous, rule-following cop. Yen, as her partner, chooses violence over courtroom justice. It’s ludicrous in a sense as Yen plays an “American” cop from “Seattle,” but that’s rapidly forgotten – In the Line of Duty IV is close to all action, or as close as possible without losing interest in the crime drama entirely. The International Export Version of Yes, Madam!is also included in this set and reportedly sourced from another 2K restoration. The quality is very much the same as the Theatrical Cut, although it does tend to look a bit softer in certain sequences.” 4/5

All four features are sourced from 2K restorations provided by Fortune Star, all with the MPEG-4 encode and certainly pulling the most out of the sometimes-problematic sources. That isn’t to say that the video quality across the board is bad, but these Fortune Star restorations tend to look a bit too flat and smooth to be considered true to the sources they used to scan. However, 88 Films make all the transfers look great nonetheless. In the Line of Duty III is barely a franchise entry, but for me it betters its two predecessors. Yes Madam’s action is better overall, but the pacing and tonal balance is much stronger here, and Michiko Nishiwaki just pushes this entry to the top of the pile for me. Limited Edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling [First Print Run of 2000 copies] The story just barely hangs together, and there are several Ed Woodian shifts between night and day and between locations, but coming to this movie for a complex investigative storyline is like going to a Friday the 13 th movie for an in depth exploration of teenage relationships… even if you DID get that it’s not really the point. Andrew Hernandez on Believer 2 (2023) Review Wow. I know you’ve hated other movies before, but this is flat out contempt!…
