I heard about Rendell being a famous thriller writer and I thought this could be good holiday reading. We do not resent this withholding of information, because it is part of the novel's satisfying, carefully contrived design. Not showing us everything is the point. The clues to the other four killings have been carefully buried. Only when you read The Keys to the Street for the second time can you sense the pleasure that Rendell must have had in inserting the references to Express Tikka and Pizza delivery service in just such a way that the first-time reader will not even stop to ask: "Why is this being mentioned?" While all these people are going about their businesses, murders are committed. Street people are found hung on the stakes on top of walls.
